The San Francisco Giants will look to pile on a struggling New York Mets squad as they visit Citi Field for the start of a three-game series on Friday night.

The Mets (21-28) are coming off being swept by the Cleveland Guardians and have lost eight of their last 10 overall. The Giants (25-26) are closing in on .500 after winning six of their last seven, but are road underdogs in the MLB odds tonight.

Tonight’s game features a battle between two rookie pitchers, a matchup I’ll break down in my free MLB picks and Giants vs. Mets predictions for Friday, May 24.

My analysis

Tonight’s game will see Kyle Harrison and Christian Scott face off for the first time in their young careers. Both rookies are highly touted, but are still learning their craft at the major league level.

Of the two, Harrison has had more early success. Since coming up to start the season, he has gone 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA and a solid 3.79 FIP. It’s a noticeable improvement from his short stint in 2023, when he was allowing 2.1 homers per nine innings.

The 22-year-old Harrison seems to be settling in, throwing five innings in each of his last two starts while allowing three runs in each. Overall, he has a 2.25 ERA over his last five outings, with the San Francisco Giants coming out on top in all five of those games.

The New York Mets have hit three homers in each of their last two games, but even with that recent offensive outburst, New York isn’t an offensive powerhouse. New York is averaging 4.27 runs per game, and even over the last week — a relatively good one for the Mets’ bats, in which they sport a .766 OPS — the Mets are averaging just 4.33 runs per game, still just below the league average.

Scott has made three starts for the Mets so far, and while he has shown plenty of promise, particularly in his debut, the 24-year-old isn’t a frontline starter just yet. Over his last two outings, Scott has allowed seven runs on 13 hits across just 10 innings. New York has also lost all three of Scott’s starts.

That may not be all Scott’s fault. The Mets have put up a dismal 9-20 record since April 20, a stretch in which little has gone right for New York. Even home games haven’t been a fix for the team, which has put up a 10-14 mark at Citi Field.

Despite all these trends and a pitching matchup that slightly favors Harrison, the oddsmakers have made the Mets the favorite tonight. That’s a mistake, and I’m jumping on the Giants at plus money in the series opener.

Giants vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

Giants moneyline

Over 7.5

LaMonte Wade Jr. to get a hit

The Giants have the clear edge tonight, and both teams have been hitting the ball well as of late. That has me looking at parlaying the Giants with the Over for my same-game parlay. The Over is 8-2 in the Giants’ last 10 games, and has a similar 7-2-1 record over the same stretch for the Mets.

I’m building this SGP around the San Francisco lineup, so I’m throwing in a leg on their hottest hitter. LaMonte Wade Jr. is hitting .339 for the year and .474 over his last six games. I’m taking him to pick up a hit tonight, as the oddsmakers are still giving us good added value on Wade to get a knock.
