Austria vs France Odds, Picks & Predictions: Slow Start for Les Bleus on Day 4 of Euro 2024

My best bet:
Under 2.5 (+115 at Betano)

My analysis
This is a game in which the bookies are expecting to see plenty of scoring. It’s easy to see why goals are possible with France’s attack featuring some of the world’s best forward talent, but let me tell you why you should be leaning toward the Under.

Firstly, let’s look at France and their defense. This is a seriously good unit, and Les Bleus conceded fewer goals in qualifying than anybody else — allowing just three in eight games. With that in mind, it’s hard to see Austria putting up too much of a threat. 

While Austria aren’t blessed in attacking positions, that won’t stop them from having a good Euro 2024. While this is a tough opener, it’s one in which Austria should be able to do better than expected and keep the scoreline respectable. 

Austria impressed in qualifying — losing just one game to Belgium — then picking up six wins in the other seven outings. They averaged less than a goal conceded per game and that’s in part down to the manager.

Ralf Rangnick was much maligned at Manchester United, but he’s done wonders with Austria. They follow the Rangnick playbooks by pressing very high and playing the ball quickly. His style has been adopted by the players in a way it wasn’t at Man Utd, and they’ve benefitted from that.

Austria have drawn with the Swiss and beaten the Serbians as a warmup to this tournament while also picking up friendly wins over Turkey and Germany. Even without injured stars David Alaba and Xaver Schlager, they have a lot to love about them.

Austria will work hard, they’re well-drilled, and they have the ability to frustrate a French team that might not start the tournament as quickly as many think. It likely won’t be enough to get anything from the match, but Austria can keep the score low.

My analysis
There’s a reason Kylian Mbappe is favored to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2024, and in order to do so he’ll probably need to start early.

If anyone is going to score for France then it’s likely to be the new Real Madrid star. Still, just 25 years old, Mbappe is still relatively young, despite the fact he’s been capped 79 times for his country. He’s scored 47 goals for France, including eight in seven World Cup games in 2022. 

With 44 goals in all competitions for PSG this season, we’re seeing Mbappe come hot into this tournament. That’s dangerous for anyone France face, and given his record for club and country, there’s a very good chance he scores against Rangnick’s Austria.
