Padres vs Rangers Prediction, Picks, & Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

The Texas Rangers return home to host the San Diego Padres for a three-game set starting tonight at Globe Life Field. We have a pick’em on the MLB odds board but my Padres vs. Rangers predictions are focusing more intently on the total.

The Rangers nearly went winless on their seven-game road trip but salvaged a Sunday Night Baseball victory in Baltimore. On the flip side, the Padres are coming off a loss following a five-game winning streak.

My analysis

We have a pitchers’ duel on tap with San Diego Padres starter Dylan Cease set to face off against Texas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Cease is 7-6 with a 3.84 ERA on the season while Eovaldi is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA.

Cease had a few hiccups in the middle of June but is coming off seven innings of one-hit ball against the Nationals. He led the Padres to victory with nine strikeouts and just two walks.

Eovaldi also went seven innings in his last start but allowed five earned runs to tie a season-high. However, that start was on the road where Eovaldi has struggled this season. Despite pitching nearly 20 more innings at home (44 2/3) than on the road (28 1/3), Eovaldi has allowed more earned runs away from home (17) than he has at Globe Life (11). That comes out to a 2.22 ERA and 0.92 WHIP at home vs. a 5.40 ERA and 1.55 WHIP when traveling.

In fact, the Rangers have played a lot of low-scoring games this season, sitting as the third-most profitable Under team at 48-32-4 (+13.10 units), including a league-best +14.25 units (26-11-2) to the Under at home.

While the Padres trend toward the Over, they’re coming off a loss in which they scored just one run on eight hits.

Cease and Eovaldi should be able to keep the game under wraps through at least six innings, and both teams should have rested bullpens after an off day on Monday.

Jurickson Profar is riding a 13-game hitting streak and has a hit in 25 of his last 30 games since May 27th. The switch-hitting left fielder is a staple in the two-hole for the Padres and should get plenty of opportunities to get on base tonight.

Adolis Garcia is also streaking right now with a run scored in five straight games and nine of his last 10 contests. In fact, Garcia has scored a run in over half of his games (14 of 26) since June 1st. Garcia bats fourth ahead of red-hot Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford.
