Washington Mystics vs New York Liberty Game 2 Odds, Picks, and Predictions: Cloud Keeps Cooking

After a potent offensive performance in Game 1, the New York Liberty can wrap up this first-round series tonight when they host the Washington Mystics for Game 2.

The Liberty signaled their intent for a deep playoff run with a comfortable 90-75 win in the series opener on Friday. Sabrina Ionescu led the way with 29 points and Jonquel Jones chipped in with a timely double-double.

That leaves the Mystics’ season on the brink, but Myisha Hines-Allen was a force in Game 1 with 21 points and eight rebounds — and the visitors can take comfort from two wins against New York earlier this year. The door is also open for another Washington player to step up big in Game 2.

There’s very little margin for error for the Washington Mystics tonight as they try to take this series back to Washington for a deciding Game 3, and that could mean big minutes for the starters after an underwhelming night from their bench on Friday. 

An upset win for the Mystics starts with a much better outing from Natasha Cloud, who had eight rebounds and eight assists in Game 1 but went 1-for-8 from the field and finished with just four points. While feeding Brittney Sykes and Elena Delle Donne is a big part of Cloud’s role, the visitors will also need their point guard to be aggressive as a scorer tonight. 

The Washington offense fell away in Game 1 after taking a 29-23 first-quarter lead, but the explosive first 10 minutes stemmed from Cloud’s playmaking and six early assists. Her ability to fill up the box score makes her a player to watch in Game 2.

I expect a bounce-back game here from Cloud, who will match up nicely against an injured Courtney Vandersloot while playing big minutes with the season on the line. Cloud had a 17-6-5 line in the season finale against the New York Liberty and also cruised past this prop line in the two meetings earlier in the year.

With every chance of another high-scoring battle on tap tonight, I like these odds for Cloud to be in do-it-all mode and keep the Mystics’ offense on track.

After New York pulled away for a 15-point win in Game 1, tonight’s spread is bumped up to 10.5 after we saw a 9-point line for Friday’s contest. The Mystics had no answer for Sabrina Ionescu’s 3-point barrage (7-for-13 from deep) in the opener and fell to a heavy loss despite holding Breanna Stewart to just three field goal makes.

That’s ominous heading into Game 2, but look for more urgency from a Washington team that boasts multiple capable scorers. Sykes’ buzzer-beater earned the Mystics a win at Barclays Center on the last day of the regular season, and the visitors are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games after a loss. They’re also 5-1 ATS in the past six matchups against New York.

The Liberty are 7-2 in their last nine games against teams in the East and a win tonight would mean some extra rest before the semifinals begin. 

With this New York juggernaut, the Over has been a steady winner. It’s hit in the hosts’ last four games and it’s 11-3 in their past 14 contests against fellow Eastern Conference teams. The Liberty have scored 85 points or more in each of their last 10 games, and they’ve reached 90 points in six of them.

Keep in mind too that the Over has been a winning ticket in Washington’s last four Round 1 playoff games, and it’s fair to expect the Mystics to shoot better from deep tonight after a 23% effort on Friday.
