My analysis
The Pittsburgh Penguins might be running out of gas. After a 6-0-1 stretch, the Pens are just 1-1-1 in their last three games and that victory came in overtime after blowing multiple 2-goal leads.
Pittsburgh has relied heavily on Alex Nedeljkovic in net and that usage is showing. He’s allowed 15 goals in his last four games, including three goals on 16 shots before getting pulled halfway through Saturday’s loss. Before that, he’d allowed just 12 goals in his previous six games while going 5-0-1.
The wear and tear is also showing in the Penguins’ underlying numbers. They have the 13th-worst expected goals share at 5-on-5 in the last 10 games (48.89%), per Natural Stat Trick. On the flip side, the Nashville Predators have the seventh-best xGF% in that span at 55.48% thanks to a league-best 3.56 expected goals for per 60 minutes.
Nashville has also been on a good streak of its own as of late. The Preds are 4-1-1 in their last six games with a goal differential of 23-16.
Finally, although the Penguins are at home, there isn’t much difference between Pittsburgh’s home record (22-14-4) and Nashville’s road record (24-13-3).
