The Toronto Blue Jays took care of business in their home opener last night and they’ll look to pile more misery on the slumping Seattle Mariners in tonight’s rematch.
At a new-look Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays rode 6 2/3 shutout innings from Jose Berrios and a clutch two-RBI single from Davis Schneider for a 5-2 win — and the hosts are favorites again here in the latest MLB odds.
The Mariners have now slipped to 4-7, and they’ll send George Kirby to the bump today against Toronto veteran Chris Bassitt. Check out my free MLB picks and Mariners vs. Blue Jays predictions for this Tuesday, April 9 showdown.

My analysis
Maybe the Toronto Blue Jays just needed to be back at their home ballpark to give their offense a jolt. It’s been tough sledding for the Toronto hitters this season, but they got after Luis Castillo yesterday — and tonight, I’m picking the hosts to pick up where they left off.
Eight different players had a hit for the hosts last night as they bounced back from a season-opening road trip in which they scored three runs or fewer in seven of their 10 games.
The Seattle Mariners are having their own struggles at the plate, averaging just three runs per game, and they had no answer for Berrios last night as the top of the order went 1-for-18. The visitors ended up with seven hits but didn’t make the most of their baserunners and only got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning.
Though Chris Bassitt hasn’t looked as sharp as Berrios through his first two starts, he pitched well at Rogers Centre last year, posting a 2.86 ERA at home on the way to a 16-win season. I’m trusting him to be on the money here and improve on an ugly 7.71 ERA.
I’m also comfortable fading Seattle starter George Kirby after he was roughed up by the Cleveland Guardians for six earned runs on nine hits in his last outing.
The Blue Jays seemed like a re-energized team yesterday, and I’m wagering on Toronto to make it back-to-back home victories.
Blue Jays star player prop
My best bet
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 RBIs (+170 at PROLINE+)
The Toronto batter props haven’t jumped off the screen during a rough start on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros and New York Yankees, but there were signs of life yesterday.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was at the heart of the offensive upswing with two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth inning. He’s only had three career at-bats against Kirby but took a double off the Seattle righty in one of those.
Vladdy’s .220 batting average through 11 games is still way below expectations, but he’s trending in the right direction again and I see him driving in a run for a second straight night here.

Mariners vs Blue Jays spread and Over/Under analysis
- The Blue Jays powered to a much-needed win yesterday to snap a three-game skid, but these teams split their six meetings last season, with five of those matchups decided by just a single run.
- The Mariners have dropped five of their past six contests, and they’ve scored just 33 runs through 11 games (fifth lowest in the league). Julio Rodriguez’s 8-for-43 start is a big reason for Seattle’s lack of production.
- If the visitors are going to hit back tonight, Cal Raleigh is the likeliest source of runs. He homered in the ninth inning yesterday for his eighth dinger in his last 11 contests against the Blue Jays.
- The Under was a winning ticket last night as the teams combined for seven runs, and it’s tough to stray from that pick with both line-ups hitting so poorly — Toronto has a .206 average; Seattle is at .212. The Under has also hit in three of the past four meetings between these teams.
Mariners vs Blue Jays trend
The Mariners’ sluggish form dates back beyond this season — they’ve only covered the run line in nine of their last 33 games. Find more MLB betting trends for Mariners vs. Blue Jays
