Dodgers vs Giants Prediction, Picks, & Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

Tyler Glasnow's been on a serious strikeout heater, and our MLB picks don't see the Giants doing anything to slow down the Dodgers hurler.

The San Francisco Giants (40-43) grabbed an inspirational walk-off victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers (51-32) in Game 1 of their three-game weekend series.

With stud Tyler Glasnow on the mound tonight, my Dodgers vs. Giants predictions see them having trouble replicating that success.

Let’s take a closer look in my MLB picks for Saturday, June 29.

Dodgers vs Giants prediction

My best bet
Tyler Glasnow Over 7.5 strikeouts (+105 at BetRivers)

My analysis

The Major League strikeout leader is Tyler Glasnow of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who has fanned 135 batters this season across 100 innings of work. Only three others have accumulated 120+ strikeouts — Garrett Crochet, Dylan Cease, and Cole Ragans.

In an era of three true outcomes, Glasnow has perfected the art — he strikes out more batters than anyone else and successfully limits walks (6.5% BB%), although he could avoid home runs more effectively (he’s allowed 11, which ranks 47th among pitchers).

The towering hurler’s virtuosity for the punchout has especially been on display lately, notching eight or more Ks in 10 of his last 11 games. He’s averaging 9.2 strikeouts per game in that span in what can be described as a run of sustained dominance.

The Cillian Murphy doppelganger doesn’t have a difficult matchup on Sunday as the San Francisco Giants rank 18th in wRC+ (87) and 22nd in wOBA (.285) against right-handed pitching in the last 10 days. They’ve hardly been immune to the punchout, posting the ninth-highest K% (24.1%) in that timespan.

The Giants have proven beatable by right-handers lately. Spot-starter Hunter Wesneski notched seven strikeouts on just 72 pitches on Wednesday, while faltering veteran Kyle Hendricks experienced a career revival by holding SF to two earned across seven innings the day before. Sonny Gray allowed a single hit while notching eight punchouts on Monday.

You only have to go back to yesterday to note rookie Landon Knack — who had just 18 strikeouts in 25 ⅔ career IP entering the game — fanning seven Giants on just 76 pitches. I’m worried thinking about what Knack’s teammate is capable of as a follow-up.

This is a road matchup against a rival, but that doesn’t give me pause, considering Glasnow posted 12 strikeouts against a lethal New York Yankees lineup in his last road start. In fact, he’s been more effective on the road (2.45 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 39.4% K%) than at home (3.21 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 32% K%) this season.

Dodgers vs Giants same-game parlay (SGP)

Tyler Glasnow Over 7.5 strikeouts

Under 7.5

Jorge Soler Under 0.5 total bases

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Dodgers tend to play in low-scoring games when Glasnow is on the bump, going 2-4 O/U in his last six starts. The Giants haven’t proven capable of punishing right-handed pitchers, especially not ones of Glasnow’s caliber.

On the flip side, SF will utilize a bullpen game. Results have been mixed when manager Bob Melvin opts for this approach. One factor working in his team’s favor is that their rivals are without star shortstop Mookie Betts and the bottom of the order has been a mess all year. So as long as they can mix and match against the top four of the lineup, then this isn’t a bad matchup.

Jorge Soler is 1-for-7 with three strikeouts in his career against Glasnow, and this doesn’t forecast as a successful day at the dish against a pitcher with a .162 BA allowed against right-handed bats.
