Virginia Tech 24, Virginia 20: Michael Brewer threw for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the host Hokies past the rival Cavaliers to become bowl eligible for the 22nd consecutive season.

J.C. Coleman rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries for Virginia Tech (6-6, 3-5 ACC), which will extend the nation's longest streak of bowl appearances. Cam Phillips totaled five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown and tight end Bucky Hodges hauled in three catches for 61 yards and a score, while also recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown for the Hokies, who hold onto the Commonwealth Cup with the win over their in-state rivals.

Greyson Lambert threw for 211 yards and a touchdown to lead the offense for Virginia (5-7, 3-5 ACC), which failed to capitalize on last week's win over Miami (Fla.) and has lost five of its last six games. Canaan Severin had four catches for 82 yards, Taquan Mizzell grabbed four for 74 yards and Zachary Swanson added three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown for the Cavaliers.

Lambert connected with Swanson on a 20-yard touchdown strike to give the Cavaliers a 20-17 lead with 2:55 to play before Brewer returned fire by hooking up with Hodges on a 9-yard score, completing a three-play, 75-yard drive with 1:48 left to put Virginia Tech ahead for good. Lambert left the game after a big hit on the final drive and backup Matt Johns was sacked on fourth down in Hokies' territory to secure the win for Virginia Tech.

After Joey Slye and Ian Frye traded first-quarter field goals, C.J. Reavis blocked Alec Vozenilek's punt and Hodges fell on the ball in the end zone to stake Virginia Tech to a 10-3 lead with 9:30 left before halftime. Following Frye's field goal from 21 yards out, Brewer was hit as he threw from just in front of his own goal line and his pass attempt was grabbed by lineman David Dean, who plunged into the end zone to put Virginia ahead 13-10 at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia Tech has won 11 straight games in the series against Virginia, improving to 54-37-5 all-time. ... Cavaliers S Quin Blanding broke LB Ahmad Brooks' school record for a freshman with his 118th tackle of the season. ... Hokies QB Brenden Motley left the game in the second quarter with concussion symptoms and did not return.
