Joel Farabee had a goal and three assists and the Philadelphia Flyers broke things open in the third period Wednesday in a 6-3 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

James van Riemsdyk, Nolan Patrick, Michael Raffl, Oskar Lindblom and Kevin Hayes also scored, and Erik Gustafsson added two assists for Philadelphia. Carter Hart made 31 saves.

Mark Jankowski and Brandon Tanev each had a goal and an assist and Sidney Crosby also scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry made 19 saves.

The Penguins struck first. Jared McCann maneuvered the puck from behind the net toward the left circle. His feed to Jankowski knuckled off Philadelphia's Jakub Voracek, and Jankowski put the puck in off Hart at 5:14 of the first period.

The Flyers tied it at 15:11 of the first on a power play. Farabee fed Gustafsson, who took a one-timer from the left point. van Riemsdyk, stationed in front of the net, deflected the puck inside the far post.

Again on a Philadelphia power play, Gustafsson let loose another shot from the left point off a pass from Farabee. Patrick, in the slot, got a piece of it for a 2-1 Flyers lead with 7.8 seconds left in the first.

Crosby tied it at 3:39 of the second on a power play. He intercepted Hart's clearing attempt from behind the net by batting the puck out of the air, then tapped it into the vacated net with a one-handed, backhand sweep.

Philadelphia regained the lead, 3-2, with 1:06 left in the second. Farabee, to Jarry's left, moved in front of the crease and put the puck inside the far post.

Tanev produced the game's third tie at 3:01 of the third. Off a cross-ice pass from Jankowski, he lofted a shot far side from the left circle.

The Flyers took a 4-3 lead at 5:37 of the third when Raffl, coming down the slot, converted a pass from the end boards by Scott Laughton.

Lindblom tipped in a Travis Konecny backhander at 12:14, and Hayes made it 6-3 only 20 seconds later.
