Brandon Tanev scored a short-handed goal with 1:03 left in overtime Wednesday to give the host Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 win and hand the Colorado Avalanche their first loss of the season.

Tanev's shot from the bottom of the left circle was inadvertently knocked across the goal line by Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog near the far post.

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist, Jake Guentzel scored, and Matt Murray made 26 saves for Pittsburgh, which won its fourth straight.

Matt Calvert and Nathan MacKinnon scored for the Avalanche, who entered the game 5-0-0, the last remaining NHL team without a loss. Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves.

It shaped up as a showdown between preeminent centers Crosby and MacKinnon, who are friends and offseason workout partners. Although he was able to score, MacKinnon was limited after Pittsburgh winger Patric Hornqvist hit him in the first period, catching him in the left thigh.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, during an in-game NBCSN interview, said MacKinnon had a charley horse.

Linesman Michel Cormier also fell into the boards in the second minute of the second period, leaving three officials to work the balance of the game.

Calvert gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at 3:16 of the first. From the right hash mark, he snapped the puck past Murray's glove.

During four-on-four play at 17:22 of the first, Crosby tied it with one of his signature goals. From the left point, he cut toward the net, leaving Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson in his dust. He cut across the bottom of the slot, maneuvering past the other defender, Samuel Girard, and scored on a backhander.

Guentzel broke the 1-1 tie at 15:30 of the second with his team-leading fifth goal. He took a pass from Crosby, went backhand to forehand and roofed a shot past Grubauer.

The assist gave Crosby his fourth straight multiple-point games. He has a point in each of his team's games, a seven-game streak.

MacKinnon made it 2-2 at 2:56 of the third. He took a pass from Mikko Rantanen on a two-on-one and flipped the puck past Murray's glove. Like Crosby, MacKinnon has a point in each of his team's games, a six-game streak.
