Washington Nationals vs San Francisco Giants Box Score on Aug 05, 2019

Right-hander Erick Fedde combined with three relievers on a seven-hit shutout and Matt Adams cracked a run-scoring double Monday night, giving the Washington Nationals a 4-0 victory over the host San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series.

Adam Eaton singled, walked and scored twice, helping the Nationals beat the Giants for the third time in four meetings this season.

Fedde (2-2), who had been winless since May 26, allowed just one runner past first base in six innings. He gave up six hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Daniel Hudson, Fernando Rodney and Sean Doolittle brought home Fedde's win, combining for three innings of one-hit relief. Doolittle wrapped up the shutout with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The shutout was the 10th of the season for Washington.

The Nationals broke a scoreless tie against Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (8-9) on a two-out RBI single by Anthony Rendon in the third inning, before giving the Washington pitchers some breathing room with a two-run fifth against reliever Sam Coonrod.

After three walks loaded the bases, Trea Turner scored on a balk with Adams at the plate. Later in the at-bat, Adams doubled in Eaton for a 3-0 lead.

Samardzija was pulled after four laborious innings, having thrown 98 pitches. He was charged with just one run on three hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Samardzija also contributed to the Giants' best scoring opportunity when he doubled with one out in the third inning. He advanced to third on Mike Yastrzemski's two-out single to left field, but was stranded there when Fedde got Buster Posey to fly out.

The loss was the 10th of the 34-year-old's career against the Nationals, tying him with the New York Mets' Zack Wheeler for most among active pitchers against the Nats.

The Nationals added an insurance run in the ninth when Rendon and Juan Soto executed a double steal, with Rendon taking the plate to increase the lead to 4-0.

Washington was out-hit 7-6 in the game, but benefitted from eight walks, with Soto drawing three and Adams two. Rendon had two of the six hits.

Samardzija's double was the only extra-base hit for the Giants, who were opening a nine-game homestand.
