Washington Nationals vs Arizona Diamondbacks Box Score on Aug 02, 2019

Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter, Juan Soto homered for the fourth time in five games and the Washington Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 on Friday night in Phoenix.

Matt Adams' two-out, two-run double gave the Nationals a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning before Soto's solo blast to right field in the eighth. The 20-year-old has a seven-game RBI streak.

Starter Joe Ross (1-3) struggled early, walking five batters in the first 2 1/3 innings, but he didn't give up a hit until rookie pitcher Alex Young hustled to beat out an infield single with one out in the fifth. Young had been 0-for-10 in his career.

Ross, who allowed nine earned runs over 10 innings in his previous two appearances, struck out three and walked five in 5 1/3 innings before Washington turned to two of its three relievers acquired at Wednesday's trade deadline.

Roenis Elias, acquired from Seattle, got the final two outs of the sixth inning and hit for himself in the bottom of the inning. In his seventh career at-bat, Elias ran hard on a bouncer over the mound and grabbed at his right hamstring as he neared the bag.

Hunter Strickland, also picked up from Seattle, came in to pitch the seventh, throwing 10 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect eighth, and Sean Doolittle cruised through a hitless ninth on nine pitches for his 24th save.

Young (4-1) suffered his first loss in his sixth career start.

He allowed one hit through five innings -- Trea Turner's single to lead off the game -- before Adam Eaton doubled to start the sixth. Eaton was still on second with two outs, when Arizona intentionally walked Brian Dozier to get to the left-hitting Adams, who had struck out in his first two at-bats against the left-hander Young.

Adams took Young's first pitch down into right field for a two-run double and a 2-0 lead.

Young struck out a career-high nine while allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in six innings.

Ross used a double play to get out of the second inning after issuing two walks, and he retired the final two batters of the third after walking Jarrod Dyson and Ketel Marte on eight consecutive balls.

The last time the Diamondbacks had only one hit was May 4, 2018, against the Houston Astros.
