Seattle Mariners vs San Diego Padres Box Score on May 22, 2021

Two-out, run-scoring singles by Eric Hosmer and Austin Nola capped a tie-breaking, five-run fifth inning Saturday night as the San Diego Padres handed the visiting Seattle Mariners a 6-4 defeat.

The win was the Padres eighth straight and 11th in their last 12 games, boosting San Diego into first in the National League West. Seattle lost a fifth straight game and is 3-10 over the last 13 games.

The Padres had four hits in the fifth with the Mariners committing three errors and left-handed starter Justus Sheffield (3-4) issuing a pair of walks, one intentionally.

The score was tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the fifth.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nola drew a one-out walk and scored on Ha-Seong Kim's double into the left field corner. The Mariners tied the game when Mitch Haniger led off the third with his 13th homer of the season, a drive into the left field seats off Padres starter Ryan Weathers.

Jorge Mateo opened the fifth with a single, was bunted to second by pinch-hitting pitcher Joe Musgrove, stole third and scored the tie-breaking run on catcher Tom Murphy's wild throw to third.

Tommy Pham drew a walk and moved to third on Jurickson Profar's single to right. After Profar stole second and Jake Cronenworth struck out, Sheffield intentionally walked Tatis. Hosmer lined a two-out single to left and Tatis scored when the throw to the plate got through Murphy. Hosmer moved to third when the ball got away from Sheffield and scored on Nola's hit.

The Mariners got a second run in the eighth on a double by Kyle Seager, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Nottingham. They scored two more in the ninth on a Murphy double, a passed ball, a hit-by-pitch and a throwing error by reliever Mark Melancon, who got his Major League-leading 16th save.

Weathers allowed a run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in four innings. Craig Stammen (3-1) struck out two in a perfect inning to pick up the win. Dinelson Lamet allowed an unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts in three innings -- his longest outing of the season.

Sheffield gave up all six Padres runs (five earned) on seven hits and five walks with three strikeouts in five innings.
