Rangers vs Devils Game 5 Odds, Picks, and Predictions: Goals Tough to Come By

Akira Schmid has been commendable, and Igor Shesterkin's reputation speaks for itself. With Game 5 likely to take on a tense, defense-first mood, our NHL picks aren't tabbing the Rangers and Devils to light the lamp much tonight.

What a wild first four games between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers.

The series is all knotted up at 2-2 heading back to New Jersey, but the road team has won every single game thus far.

Both games at Madison Square Garden were extremely low-scoring. Igor Shesterkin has been phenomenal for the Rangers in all four games, while Akira Schmid made his mark on the series in the previous two games.

This is a pivotal Game 5 and I expect both teams to be somewhat tense. Find out my best bet in our free NHL picks and predictions for Devils vs. Rangers on Thursday, April 27.

Rangers vs Devils Game 5 predictions

It took New Jersey a couple of games to settle into this series, but in Game 4, we saw what the Devils’ brand of hockey has looked like all season long.

Akira Schmid has come into this series after not playing Games 1 or 2, and he has made an immediate impact,  boasting a .966 save percentage and a 0.91 goals against average, but just his overall presence has given this Devils team a different feel defensively.

The Rangers scored 10 goals in the first two games when facing Vitek Vanecek, but they were only able to score two goals in the last two games.

Igor Shesterkin has been the most consistent player for the Rangers in this series. His numbers have been very impressive as well, skating to a .941 save percentage and a 1.44 goals against average.

I don’t know what changed, but when this series shifted to Madison Square Garden it’s almost as if the scoring touch disappeared. Both teams combined have only converted once on the power play in the last 13 attempts.

This is a massive game that is likely going to ultimately decide the outcome of the series. I don’t think either team will take many risks, resulting in a low-scoring affair with strong goaltending. I’m going with the Under.

My best bet: Under 5.5 (-120 at BetMGM)

Rangers vs Devils Game 5 moneyline analysis

This series is completely up for grabs right now. The momentum has certainly shifted in the New Jersey Devils’ favor, but I am most definitely not counting out this New York Rangers team that has shown nothing, but resilience when it’s in a time of need.

The underdog and road team has won all four meetings in the series and the Rangers happen to be 8-3 in their last 11 trips to New Jersey.

The Rangers have shown that, at their best, they can completely dominate the Devils, whereas when the Devils were at their best (Game 4), the game was still very competitive. Schmid has been impressive, but I have all the faith in the world in Shesterkin. I’m leaning Rangers.

Rangers vs Devils Game 5 Over/Under analysis

The Devils and Rangers both have a ton of talented players offensively, but they haven’t been filling the net all that much lately. The Devils are currently the worst offensive team in the playoffs, only averaging 1.75 goals per game, while the Rangers have gone quiet and are now only scoring 3.00 goals per game.

The Rangers power play was hot in the first two games of the series, but they were unable to convert on eight attempts in the last two games.

The Devils are still waiting for some of their offensive scoring threats to find the back of the net. They have only had five players who have scored goals, still waiting for Dawson Mercer, Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt to get on the scoresheet.

The story of this game is going to be which goalie can steal it. Schmid has done his job in both starts, but Shesterkin is going to have to outshine him.

Either way, I don’t see many goals coming in this one. I like the Under.
