Oilers vs Rangers Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Shesterkin Key to Home Win

The Oilers have been slumping on defense (what else is new) but their offense is also suddenly stalling. With Igor Shesterkin back in nets for the Rangers, that's a recipe for disappointment, as our NHL picks explain.

The Edmonton Oilers haven’t had the best start to their three-game east coast trip, losing the first two games by a combined score of 8-2 after running into hot two very strong goaltenders. Today, they will face another in Igor Shesterkin.

The New York Rangers are returning home after what was an interesting west coast road trip. They went 2-1-1, but their most recent game was a very disappointing loss against the Anaheim Ducks.

The good news for the Rangers is that Shesterkin will be back in goal. Find out how much that helps them in our NHL picks and predictions for Rangers vs. Oilers on Saturday, November 26.

Oilers vs Rangers best odds

Oilers vs Rangers picks and predictions

The Rangers’ record might be 10-7-4, but that’s a little skewed because their backup goalie, Jaroslav Halak, is 0-5-1. When Igor Shesterkin starts, the team is 10-2-3 and he will mind the goal in this matchup. Shesterkin has really picked up his game as of late, going 4-0-1 in his last five.

The Rangers haven’t necessarily been at their best at home lately, going 2-6 in their last eight home games — but the last time Edmonton came to town, the Rangers beat them 4-1. Granted, that was last season, but the Oilers have struggled mightily on their east coast trip. Edmonton has been struggling to finish over the course of its last four games, only scoring a combined seven goals in that span.

Edmonton has one of the best offenses in the league, but relies heavily on Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and is are also missing a key contributor in Evander Kane, who is still injured.

If the Rangers can focus on shutting down McDavid and Draisaitl, the Oilers are going to struggle to score on Shesterkin. Entering this game, the Rangers are only giving up an expected 2.79 goals against per 60 minutes and are allowing the fourth-fewest shots allowed, surrendering 28.3 against.

Shesterkin is far and away the better goalie in this matchup and with the Oilers struggling to finish lately, this feels like a game that he will control on home ice. The Rangers’ ability to finish hasn’t been consistent, but they aren’t having any issues generating offense. The puck will go in eventually. I think the Rangers will have a strong effort in what is considered a very big game, this is a game they should win.

Oilers vs Rangers moneyline analysis

The Rangers and Oilers are having similar issues at even strength, both of them have a ton of talent offensively and generate plenty of scoring chances, but the puck just isn’t going in consistently enough. In all situations, the Oilers have had a little more success in the goal-scoring department, averaging 3.30 goals, while the Rangers are just averaging 3.00 goals per game.

However, the Rangers have been the much better defensive team. Edmonton is allowing 3.60 goals against per game, currently ranked 27th in the league, which seems like a tale as old as time. They have always been strong offensively and weak in their own end — same story this season.

Jack Campbell was brought in to be the team’s No. 1 goalie, but he’s being outperformed by Stuart Skinner. Campbell is skating to a 6-5-0 record with a .876 SV% and a 4.15 GAA. Skinner, on the other hand, has a worse record of 4-5-0, but he boasts a .921 SV% and a 2.78 GAA.

The Oilers haven’t confirmed who is starting yet, but either way, Shesterkin is the more elite goalie in this matchup. The Rangers should win on home ice.

Oilers vs Rangers Over/Under analysis

This matchup definitely seems like it should be wide open offensively, which it very well could be, but the Rangers and Oilers aren’t finishing consistently enough to rely on the goal-scoring.

They are both underperforming their expected goals per game and there seems to be a constant trend when these two teams play each other of the Under hitting. The Under is 5-2 in their last seven meetings, which is pretty wild considering all of the talented offensive players on each team.

I wouldn’t call this a crazy goaltending matchup, but whenever Shesterkin is in goal, the Under seems like the smart bet. The Rangers will be very excited to be back on home ice and in front of their crowd and, with that being said, I think this game will go Under.
