My analysis
Nathan Eovaldi has had a promising start to the season with a 2.68 ERA and just 42 hits allowed in 10 starts.
In his 57 innings pitched, he has the lowest WHIP among Texas Rangers starting pitchers (1.088) and the lowest hits per nine innings pitched (6.6). On average, the 34-year-old may only be going a shade under six frames, but when he’s on, he’s allowing fewer than five hits per outing.
Eovaldi has allowed Under 4.5 hits in six of 10 starts and is positioned to once again vs. this struggling Seattle Mariners lineup. Seattle is one of the worst batting teams in baseball, even if its record would make you think otherwise.
The Mariners are first in the MLB in strikeouts (719), third-last in batting average (.221), seventh-last in OPS (.665), and 10th-last in total bases (857). They’re also down former All-Stars Ty France and Jorge Polanco, who are both on the 10-day IL.
That opens the door for Eovaldi to have one of his better pitching performances of the season. The righty has two pitches he uses more than 18% of the time with his four-seamer (36%) and split finger (30.6%).
Both pitches have been nasty this season, with batters hitting just .182 with a .295 SLG against his four-seamer and .161 with a .274 SLG against his split finger. Those two pitches alone should help him make quick work of Seattle’s bats.

The wildest part about Seattle’s struggling hitters has been Julio Rodriguez looking human. The two-time All-Star has just six home runs in 72 games, with his .265 average and .350 SLG career lows. It’ll be tough for him to get it together against Eovaldi.
Rodriguez is hitting under .215 against three of Eovaldi’s top four pitches — split finger, curveball, and cutter — and he won’t be the only All-Star struggling in this matchup.
Corey Seager has been sporadic this season, and he’s hitting under .230 against two of George Kirby’s top three pitches — four seamer and slider.
