You need a QB to win in this league. They don't grow on trees. Very hard to come by. He has at least gotten his team to the playoffs and been competitive. There is likely hope he eventually breaks through. Personally as a Vikings fan I say good riddance. I was ready to move on from Captain Checkdown Kirk years ago. I knew we would always be competitive but never actually win a Superbowl with him. If you are not trying to build a Superbowl team then you are merely trying to keep your job. Not a fan of the Sam Darnold signing but not much available either. Looks like Vikes are drafting a QB. God help them. I personally hope they trade down in the first round and draft Penix. Build draft capital. But I am certain the won't. Everything I have read and heard (from reputable sources) suggest Vikings are mortgaging the future (as who knows how long you keep JJ, Addison and TJ I guess) and trading up with the Patriots or higher for Drake Maye. I really really really really (can't say really enough) hope not. But Vikings are the worst at smoke screens so I guess wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

3 playoff trips and 1 playoff win in 12 seasons, I wouldnt really call that competitive.

Technically 4 times. 3 with Minnesota and once with Washington. His record with the Vikings was 50-37-1 so that does make the team competitive. Trust me I am happy we are moving on from him. Yes there are plenty that could be worst but who knows the might be plenty that can be better too.

2 with Vikings 2019 and 2022. Regular season record with Vikes
2018 8-7-1
2019 10-5
2020 7-9
2021 8-8
2022 13-4
2023 4-4
Very pedestrian. Besides that lockbox 2022 year when they won 11 one score games he’d have exactly a .500 regular season win percentage. Highway robbery.

180 million for that slouch. Torn Achilles at 36. Atlanta can't stop tripping on its own dick. What a ridiculous contract. Mn native and I'll tell ya I'm happy as hell we got rid of 2 minute cousins. World class choker. Mediocre at best.

Washington Redskins drafted Kirk Cousins in the 4th round of the 2012 draft, the same year they drafted Robert Griffin III in the first round. This nugget was posted by Armadillo Sports. Not an exact science, picking on draft day.

I get what you are saying. But the NFL is such a QB-driven league nowadays. But money and concern about the recovery from the injury is an okay reason to move on. Cousins is a very capable QB. ATL needed an instant upgrade at that position badly. But the issue with picking and choosing numbers is that they count all of them. For example, if you throw out the 2020 Pandemic year where they lost 4 one-score games — his record would be 43-28. But it is such a tricky time balancing with the money you have to spend on a good QB and surround him with talent and maintain a competitive defense, etc.
Just too many fans expect more success from a good QB than is realistic — not every QB is going to be Brady or Mahomes. Many, many QBs seem as though they should have won more playoffs — Peyton, Brees even. So, some of the good, but not alltime greats, have higher expectations that are realistic.

No need to pick and choose numbers other than Cousins has 1 playoff win in since he entered the league in 2012. Yet there are other guys who are criticized for their lack of playoff success or having 1 playoff win like Cousins, but those other guys who are criticized have only played half the seasons Kirk has, but Kirk's name is never brought up somehow he escapes criticism. When it's time for other guys to get paid people come out of the woodwork to let you know they are not worth the money and all during that time Cousins has signed huge contract after huge contract with no criticism and still only 1 playoff win. So would you pay 400 mil for 1 playoff win in 12 seasons? It's a valid question.

Absolutely Cousins gets criticized for it. I mean you just did it, for example. He was criticized when he signed with Minnesota.
For sure if a major gauge you want to use is playoff wins — you can get cheaper QBs with more playoff wins. Like Hill, Tannehill, Mariota, and Minshew. Or could’ve gotten Wilson or Flacco.
But the bottom line is that it is so hard to even get to the playoffs and then, harder still, to win once you get there.
You can even question whether Washington or Minnesota should really be considered playoff contenders—and if they are, should they even win once they get there, no matter the QB they have.
Cousins is good. You can say he is overpaid. But, besides Mahomes and Rodgers, who is really that much better than Cousins that does not have better talent. Maybe Burrow. Allen is; but is not consistent and chokes. Stafford and Goff are along the same lines as Cousins. The issue is do you pay THAT much for a good QB at the expense of other talent. It is hard to get the dynamic right to win in the playoffs with a younger QB before you have to start paying them. BUT if you are a team that think you have the talent and a good QB will help you make that next step — you almost have to do it. Like the Rams or Bucs, etc. But it could backfire like with the Broncos, etc.
But I guess ATL will find out — if Cousins heals well.

Yes Cousins is good, just not a guy who's gonna get you over the hump. He needs things to be "perfect" in order to do big things. He's not the X factor a guy who goes out there and gets W's when things don't seem to be in your favor. That kind of money should be for the QB's that are game changers. Cousins is in the Goff, Prescott tier, even Allen and Tua. Guys who even when they are on good teams that are good on both sides of the ball are gonna come up short Good but not great and that's ok, but they pay these guys like they are great when they arn't. The Mahomes and Rodgers type are just few and far between.

I thought teams had w-L records not qbs if you can’t see his talent and recognize he has been in bad situations you are blind
QB are like pitchers in MLB — the only position where they track W/L records because they are so critical. The NFL is the most QB-reliant that it ever has been — it can be argued W/L are even more determined by the QB.

I mostly agree. But as you pointed out how they did in one-score games. A good QB helps in the league nowadays when the NFL is such a tight league and so many games come down to one score, or the last possession.
I just cannot blame a team that thinks they need a good QB to ‘get over the hump’ for getting the best QB available—even if they have to pay. I am not so sure that MINN fit that category at the time. But for sure Cousins did better than anyone else they could have gotten at the time. I am not sure DEN was at that point when they got Wilson. I think TB was at the time. I do not think it mattered with the Rams either way. NO was not. I think NYJ were at that point with their defense and that division. I think ATL might be just because of the division. But he had to heal and every other part of the ATL team has to be as good as they were last year or better.
The only two QBs in the last several years that I would consider an upgrade to get a team over the hump would be Brady and Mahomes. Maybe Rodgers and possibly Burrow. The rest of them are simply what you hope is an upgrade. There is NO question Cousins is an instant upgrade. But it will be interesting in that division to see if he is one to get them over the hump.
The only problem is every team’s ‘hump’ is NOT the same. For example, just making the playoffs —period — is a HUGE hump for most teams — NOT winning a playoff game. THAT was the case for MIN and is the case for ATL. For SF the hump is to WIN the SB. The hump for KC is to win the SB this year. The hump for some teams is to even have a winning season.
I say all of that to say this: IF ATL or MIN were legitimate contenders I think Cousins could get them over the hump. But just because a team makes a big-name signing at QB does not mean what they think their ‘hump’ is — is very realistic.

Falcs have a good enough team that they didnt need to pay 40+ mil for a qb. They could have gotten a decent qb pay for much less a low turnover guy something a little more than a game manager. Cousins has again inherited tons of talent will put up numbers by default that will make him seem better than he is. Falcs had the 11th ranked defense last year thats pretty good couple that with good offensive talent and you should be able to make some noise. They are just young. At season's end PFF had Falcs offensive line ranked #4 so things should look pretty good going into next season. The pieces are there. On paper with good young offensive talent and a better than middle of the pack defense a good QB should be able to come in and make playoffs no doubt barring key injuries. What I expect to happen is Cousins' numbers will look good because that's what he does and he does it playing within himself like Stafford's numbers looked in Detroit or Hebert's in San Diego, but they don't translate into more wins. Cousins could have better numbers than Mahomes difference is he could finish 9-8 or 10-7 while Mahomes could win another chip.

I looked back and defensively you are correct. Except Cousins' first two years in Minny. In first year he had the 4th ranked defense and went 8-7-1. In his 2nd year they had like the 12th ranked defense and Vikes went 10-5. The next 3 years Vikes defense was like bottom 5 in the league so I'll step back a little on criticizing Cousins. It's Minny's fault that they didn't shore up the defensive side of the ball can't really hold him at fault for that. What about the nickname that some refer to him as Captain Checkdown is there much validity in that assertion?

Very true. Money saved on QB could be used somewhere else. BUT what decent QB would you think they should have gotten?

Maayyybbbeee 11-6 with this past year’s play. For sure, win the division — but most likely lose in the first round. But no idea on next season because I am not up to date on their schedule and what else they have done, or will do in the draft — or the rest of their division.

What would you project Falcs regular season to look like, 13-4, 12-5, 11-6. Surely playoffs right?
