George Kambosos vs Devin Haney betting preview
In a matter of days, Haney will be fighting the biggest fight of his career with two major handicaps going against him. First, his father and lead trainer Bill Haney will not be ringside as he was unable to secure a visa to enter Australia. Second, Haney will have to deal with a raucous crowd who will be firmly behind Kambosos in the biggest fight Australia's ever seen.
Haney is an excellent technician with a solid jab and great movement, but he’s shown that his power and durability are potential weaknesses. He recently put on a great performance against Joseph Diaz, but it didn’t erase the stinkers he turned in against faded veterans Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jorge Linares.
Kambosos hasn’t been active since his shocking win over Teofimo Lopez, but he’s a rough fighter who will be right on Haney from bell to bell. While Kambosos’ upset over Lopez was sensational, a bit of luster was lost when it was revealed that Lopez was fighting with excessive air trapped in his chest.
Even so, Kambosos holds advantages on paper in terms of the home crowd and a far less complicated camp than Haney. The weight of the event isn’t likely to hold either man down, but Kambosos’ pressure style sticks out with judges more so than Haney’s potshots and lateral movement.
This fight has heavy “Bull vs. Matador” vibes, as Kambosos’ path to win is to bully Haney, who needs to stick and move to avoid getting smothered by the hometown champ.
George Kambosos vs Devin Haney boxing prediction and best bet
Devin Haney to win
Though Haney has it rough, Kambosos may not be as ready as people think for what the American is bringing him. For someone who was on the verge of dying in the ring, an ailing Lopez managed to floor him, and earlier bouts against Lee Selby and Mickey Bey saw him struggle against boxer-minded opponents.
Outside of Vasily Lomachenko, Haney is the best pure boxer in the division. Having his lead trainer absent is problematic, but it would be a foolish gamble that Haney isn't prepared for the biggest fight of his career.
If Kambosos were a bigger puncher, then Haney would have a real problem on his hands. There’s nothing the Australian does that isn’t out of the norm. He’s a typical pressure fighter that lacks the speed and brute power to force Haney to change his approach.
If anything, Kambosos is going to be an open book for Haney. It may end up being far easier than the odds state. Haney won’t leave this to chance and will box beautifully to defeat Kambosos and become an undisputed champion.
Prediction: Devin Haney to win (-165 at FanDuel)
Best Bet
Neither fighter will be confused as a power puncher. Both of them have roughly above a 50% knockout ratio and have seen most of their recent fights go the distance without any moments where we’d see a stoppage. Try as they might, these fighters have to rely on their brains due to a lack of brawn.
Because we are favoring Haney to pull this off, the wise decision would be to pick him to win by decision. While we hate to factor in potential scoring shenanigans, Haney should win enough clear rounds to avoid them.
With that being said, going with Haney by decision scores +100, and that’s really as good as you’ll get betting on this one.
