Blue Jays vs Angels Picks and Predictions: Halos Keep Brooms at Bay

Los Angeles Angels southpaw Patrick Sandoval has delivered on breakout hype entering the season and looks to stop the bleeding against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. With Jose Berrios's uneven results, our betting picks are siding with the Halos.

The Toronto Blue Jays have taken the first three games against the Los Angeles Angels and will have an opportunity on Sunday afternoon to complete the sweep and build on their four-game win streak.

The Angels will send out Patrick Sandoval in hopes of avoiding the sweep, a pitcher who they've gone 6-1 behind this year. Opposite of him will be Jose Berrios, who has had a rough May thus far, allowing three or more earned runs in all but one start this month. Can Sandoval turn around the Angels' luck or will Berrios turn around his own and help the Blue Jays complete the sweep?

Blue Jays vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Jose Berrios (3-2, 4.75 ERA): Berrios was pegged to be one of the MLB's next big arms after racking up two All-Star appearances by the age of 25, and that potential is a large part why the Blue Jays traded for him last season. He recorded a 3.58 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in his 12 starts with Toronto last season but has had less fortune this year thus far, managing a 4.75 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through nine outings.

Patrick Sandoval (3-1, 1.79 ERA): Sandoval was a frequent name on lists of breakout candidates in the offseason and he has exceeded those projections through seven starts. The 25-year-old has five starts in which he's allowed one or fewer runs, and has only topped out at allowing three runs in the other two starts. His sterling 1.79 ERA is a product of that and is the seventh-best in MLB among pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings.

Blue Jays vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

For the Blue Jays and Angels, expectations heading into 2022 were sky-high. So far, fanbases of both teams would likely describe results as a mild success. The Blue Jays are 26-20 and fifth in the American League, but are already 6.5 games back in the AL East due to the Yankees' blistering 33-14 start. The Angels, meanwhile, are 27-21 and sit sixth in the American League but are two games back in the AL West behind the Astros.

The Blue Jays' shortcomings have — perhaps surprisingly — come at the plate, averaging a paltry 3.78 runs per game — good for 25th in MLB. Their rotation has largely anchored the team, posting a collective 3.31 ERA, which is good for eighth in the league. They have managed that mark despite a slow start from right-hander Jose Berrios, who has managed a less than ideal 4.75 ERA.

Berrios started off the month with a pair of outings in which he allowed 11 combined runs in just 10 innings but has since bounced back in his most recent pair of starts, surrendering just three runs in 13 1-3 innings. But despite the recent stretch of elevated pitching, there is reason for concern when examining Berrios' advanced metrics via Baseball Savant.

Nothing about this cross-examination of Berrios' 2022 campaign inspires much confidence when projecting forward, and could also spell trouble in particular for Sunday afternoon against an Angels' offense scoring 4.69 runs per game (sixth in the MLB). The same set of bats that Berrios has allowed a .302 batting average against in his career.

Comparatively, Sandoval is having an inverse season relative to Berrios. The 25-year-old has put together a 2022 campaign worthy of Cy Young discussion if the season were to end today, posting a 1.79 ERA while generating a 6-1 record for the Angels when he has taken the mound. This Blue Jays roster has just a combined 16 plate appearances against Sandoval, so much can't or shouldn't be taken from that sample even though he has not allowed a hit in those matchups.

Over/Under analysis

Given how good Toronto's starting pitching has been combined with their offensive struggles, it should come as no surprise that they have played very favorably towards the Under this year, going 27-18-1 (60.0%) to the Under, the fourth-best mark in the MLB. The Angels have gone 22-22-4 (50.0%) that way.

Toronto has gone Over the total in four of the last five but had gone Under in eight straight prior to that. If Sandoval can keep up his 2022 form and if Berrios can build on the two good outings he has put together most recently, then we may see a return to the Under on Sunday afternoon.

In terms of the weather, the game is projected to have 73-degree weather with 58% humidity and a mild eight mph wind blowing out to center field. None of those conditions are particularly noteworthy in regards to the total, and should not discourage a look at the Under.

Prediction: Under 8 (-105 at DraftKings)

Best bet

Although the Angels have dropped the first three games of the series, they are the better team by an appreciable margin for Sunday's finale.

It doesn't take a lot to see that there is a rather sizable gap between Patrick Sandoval and Jose Berrios in favor of the former, and when looking at the totality of this season, the Angels offense has similarly been markedly better than that of the Blue Jays.

There's also the fact that with these three losses to Toronto, the Angels have now been passed by the Blue Jays in the American League standings. A win on Sunday can reverse that while avoiding the sweep, all from the comfort of home.
