There is, and never will be a major with a name as literal as "Racial (In)equality in America" especially not with one that has the (in) in parentheses.
No need to go about slyly prying into my 'credentials' to discredit me on topic at hand kapono...nice try though...
scal,
you are never going to do any changing or convincing if you take on this childish, everyone is against me attitude. in both this thread and the other one, and i by no means want to disrespect anyone else, but it would seam that kap and myself have been debating you with respect and integrity. kap especially has given you great room and has answered you with logic and knowledge as opposed to emotion and name calling.
to be honest, it is a little disconcerting that your argument is so strong and unforgiving and you have not read invisible man. this is a staple in the cannon that you seem to know so well.
it has dawned on me why you get so much push back, so much venom. the fact is, i believe, in part, you make some (some) reasonable points. however, as someone else had pointed out, it's like you just wait for a few key words and then attack. i don't believe you actually are willing to "debate" you just want to stand on your soapbox with plugs in your ears.
if you gave just a little, if you were willing to accept that perhaps there are other viewpoints than your own, you would get so much farther. if you live your life, and your angles lead me to believe there is MUCH of your life still to life, just pressing pressing pressing and not listening, you will end up talking to the wall in an empty room.
the fact is you can argue and argue that a dog is actually a cat. if you have no give on the topic, to you, that dog is actually a cat no matter if everyone around you has learned that a dog is a dog.
i grew up in virginia beach, the home of pat robertson, where the south is really the south, and i learned so much about the black plight through history in school. what i did not learn so much of is about the multiple asian culture's history's in american history, the puerto rican introduction to an american relationship, the ways canada or mexico have engaged in our history, etc...
again, you negate any modicum of responsibility to the african populace, i repeat myself. if every white person in america had your exact viewpoint, black people would be so so far behind where they really are. obama has not been successful because white people allowed him to. oprah winfrey has not been successful because white people have allowed her to. ralph ellison was not a great writer because white people allowed him to. cornel west would certainly tell you that his intelligence, steady voice, and drive caused his success, despite the fact that he believes much as you do.
in debate, listening is the most important skill, it allows you to pick up on the nuances of your opposing side, but it keeps the argument civil and even. you seem to have huge lung capacity, but your eyes and ears are absent in this debate. it's like you want to scream to the world what it's like to be a woman. then when a woman stands up and says, no scal, you are wrong, that is not entirely true about the woman's life in america, you then say, what do you know about being a woman.... you come across as naive and uncultured, the exact opposite of what i believe you want. if you weren't so intelligent or "well spoken" (hahaha, that made me smile) you would be totally dismissed.
