That's about 7 slaves for every man, woman and child in america at the time. Since women and children clearly didn't own slaves, that ratio is cut in half (or more). Now doesn't that make for a significant number of slaves and slave holders? Do you believe all white individuals who didn't own slaves wanted it eradicated or believed and treated blacks as equals?
