Tavares gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with his 21st goal of the season at 4:47 of the second period. The goal came on the transition after a Hurricanes turnover at the Toronto blue line. TJ Brodie got the assist.

Another Carolina turnover set up a breakaway that led to Nylander's 36th goal of the season at 6:27.

The Maple Leafs took advantage of another turnover to take a 3-0 lead on Robertson's ninth goal of the season at 12:03 of the second.

The Hurricanes came back with Martinook's 12th goal of the season at 13:27. He knocked in a loose puck at the edge of the crease after a shot by Burns.
