Andrew Shaw notched his first career hat trick, Max Domi had two goals and three assists, and the visiting Montreal Canadiens pounded the Detroit Red Wings 8-1 on Tuesday.

Jonathan Drouin collected four assists while Tomas Tatar, Brendan Gallagher and Joel Armia also scored for Montreal. Carey Price made 28 saves as the Canadiens defeated the Wings for the third time in three meetings this season.

Anthony Mantha scored for the Red Wings, who have lost six straight.

Detroit starting goaltender Jimmy Howard was pulled early from his third start in a row after allowing six goals on 22 shots in the first two periods.

Tatar, a former member of the Red Wings, scored the only goal of the first period when he got behind the defense and beat Howard from close range.

Montreal extended its lead to 6-1 in the second period.

Shaw got the Canadiens' big period going after a Detroit turnover near its own blue line. He scored in front off a Domi feed. Drouin also received an assist.

Gallagher scored his 27th goal on a three-on-two break after Montreal won a puck battle in its defensive zone. Passes by Jeff Petry and Phillip Danault set up the goal.

Domi scored his first goal of the game on a four-on-two situation, converting a feed from Drouin with a shot from the slot.

Armia joined in the fun with his first goal in 15 games, blasting a shot from the left circle. Paul Byron and Jesperi Kotkaniemi set up that score.

The Wings got on the board late in the middle period when a deflected shot bounced onto Mantha's stick in front. Mantha deposited the puck past Price for his 16th goal.

Shaw scored his second goal with 43 seconds left in the period after a Detroit giveaway in its zone. Domi, alone at the left circle, found Shaw near the net.

Domi scored on a breakaway for his second goal at the 2:42 mark of the third period.

Shaw completed his hat trick with 2:33 left.
