Joe Pavelski had a natural hat trick, and the visiting San Jose Sharks rallied to top the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 on Sunday.

Pavelski collected his fifth career hat trick and first since the 2014-15 season. He scored two goals late in the second period and added an empty netter in the third.

Brent Burns had a goal and an assist, and Tim Heed also scored for San Jose. Aaron Dell made 20 saves.

Mike Green had a goal and an assist for Detroit. Gustav Nyquist and Darren Helm also scored, while Jonathan Bernier made 32 saves.

Detroit led 2-1 after one period.

Heed scored his second goal of the season when his shot from the right point deflected off the skate of Detroit's Michael Rasmussen and past Bernier. Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Kevin Labanc picked up the assists.

Helm scored his 99th career goal at 14:39 of the period when he skated in along the left side and wristed a shot that bounced off Dell's stick and caromed just inside the goalpost. Justin Abdelkader and Green were credited with assists.

Nyquist shoveled in his own rebound in front to give Detroit a 2-1 advantage in the final minute of the period. Linemates Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi collected the assists.

Detroit made it 3-1 at 8:00 of the second. On a delayed penalty to San Jose, Green scored on a one-timer from the right circle after a feed from Abdelkader. Anthony Mantha also picked up an assist.

But San Jose scored three goals in the final 6:10 of the second period to gain a 4-3 lead.

Burns pulled the Sharks within one at 13:50, beating Bernier on the glove side with a shot from the point. Timo Meier and Logan Couture had the assists.

Pavelski was falling to his knees in front as he knocked in a rebound to tie the game two minutes later. Burns and Joe Thornton assisted on Pavelski's power-play tally.

Just 55 seconds later, Pavelski scored again on a redirect from the left circle to put San Jose on top. Tomas Hertl and Vlasic had the assists.
