Connor McDavid scored the winner to cap a two-point game, and Leon Draisaitl also notched one goal and one assist as the host Edmonton Oilers snapped a five-game losing skid with a 4-3 overtime victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.

McDavid converted a backhand shot 82 seconds into the extra frame, a goal set up by Draisaitl. Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen stopped 20 shots in a seesaw affair.

Edmonton, looking to win at home for the first time in seven outings, staked an early 2-0 lead on first-period goals 78 seconds apart by Draisaitl and Sam Gagner.

Draisaitl continued his hot streak with a power-play goal at the 5:12 mark, a nifty redirect of McDavid's shot-pass for his 12th goal in as many games.

Gagner doubled the lead with a tap-in tally for his first since being re-acquired by the team via trade last week. Tobias Rieder had all the attention as the Oilers rushed to the net, and he sent a perfect pass that set up Gagner with a yawning cage.

For the second time in as many nights, the Islanders were down by a pair of goals in the first period, but they took the lead before the intermission.

Anders Lee put them on the board just before the 13-minute mark with his third goal in as many games, then the visitors netted a pair of power-play goals 28 seconds apart in the final minute of the opening frame.

While his team enjoyed a five-on-three advantage, Brock Nelson tied the game with 39 seconds on the clock when he buried a one-timer. Cal Clutterbuck then gave New York a 3-2 edge when he redirected Ryan Pulock's shot-pass.

However, Edmonton's Oscar Klefbom pounced on a rebound to tie the game with 2:52 remaining in regulation, forcing overtime.

Goalie Robin Lehner made 37 saves, 16 of them in the third period, for the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders, who dropped a 4-2 game at Calgary the night before.
