Feb 16, 2019
Petr Mrazek tallied 33 saves and provided his second shutout this month as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Dallas Stars 3-0 on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Justin Williams and Brock McGinn scored in the first period for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight and are 16-5-1 in their last 22 games as they pursue playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference. Micheal Ferland provided the final goal in the third period.
Mrazek also had a 27-save shutout on Feb. 8 on the road against the New York Rangers.
The Hurricanes won on back-to-back nights with one game remaining in a three-game homestand.
Stars goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 24 shots.
The Stars were blanked for the second game in a row after a 6-0 loss Thursday night at Tampa Bay. They used a lineup of seven defensemen against Carolina.
Dallas finished 1-3-1 on a stretch of five consecutive road games.
For the second night in a row, Carolina spent much of the game dealing with the puck in its defensive zone.
The Stars held a 26-12 edge in shots through two periods, but went 0-for-2 on power plays.
Williams and McGinn scored barely 3 1/2 minutes apart during the game's opening nine minutes.
Williams reached the 15-goal mark for the season when he took a pass in stride from Sebastian Aho in transition and delivered the puck past Khudobin. Williams has a four-game points streak.
Defenseman Justin Faulk fired a pass to McGinn, who finished with a backhand delivery for his seventh goal of the season.
Ferland scored with 3:52 to play on a power play, giving him 16 goals this season. Nino Niederreiter drew the cross-checking penalty on Alexander Radulov that allowed for the extra skater for the Hurricanes.
This was the first of two meetings between Dallas and Carolina across an eight-day period.
