Viteck Vanecek racked up 36 saves as the Washington Capitals beat the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 4-0 on Thursday night, finally winning another home game.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, Martin Fehervary, Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov scored for the Capitals, who had lost their previous six home games -- all in regulation. Washington hadn't won a home game since Jan. 22.

Conor Sheary had two assists while T.J. Oshie and Garnet Hathaway each provided an assist, helping Washington snap a three-game losing streak.

Carolina had a six-game point streak end as it lost both games of a two-game trip, with an overtime setback at Detroit two nights earlier.

Frederik Andersen made 29 saves for the Hurricanes. Carolina was blanked for just the second time this season.

Vanecek recorded his third shutout of the season and his fifth in 63 career games in the NHL. He was busiest in the third period, registering 17 saves.

Kuznetsov opened the scoring with 1:27 remaining in the first period, converting on a power play for an unassisted goal.

Fehervary and Ovechkin scored less than seven minutes apart in the second period. Ovechkin's goal also came on a power play.

Ovechkin boosted his goals total to a team-best 33 this season. He has scored 45 goals in 83 career outings against the Hurricanes.

Orlov scored an empty-net goal with 58 seconds remaining. It was his first goal in the last 10 games.

Washington reached the four-goal mark for the first time in a four-game stretch. The Capitals had a total of five goals in their previous three games combined.

Carolina managed only six shots on goal in the first period. The Hurricanes picked up the chances in the second period with 13 shots on goal.

It was another matchup involving Washington coach Peter Laviolette, who guided the Hurricanes to the 2006 Stanley Cup championship, and Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour, who was the captain on that title team.
