T.J. Oshie scored the shootout winner and the visiting Washington Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Saturday.

With both teams having converted once in their first two attempts, Oshie, who usually shoots first for Washington, took the third shot and beat Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for the win.

Lars Eller and Martin Fehervary scored in regulation for Washington and Vitek Vanecek made 29 saves in regulation and overtime.

Alex Ovechkin had an assist and has scored 18 points (eight goals, ten assists) in his past 11 games.

The Capitals were without top-line forward Tom Wilson, who left a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins after two periods on Friday with an upper-body injury.

Vinnie Hinostroza and Will Butcher scored in regulation for the Sabres, who have lost seven straight (0-5-2) and are 1-9-2 in their past 12. Playing for the second straight night, Luukkonen made 40 saves in regulation and overtime for Buffalo.

The Capitals outshot the Sabres 17-6 in the third period on a night when both teams were playing the second of back-to-backs.

Washington took a 1-0 lead when Conor Sheary passed to Eller at the far post for a goal to cap a 2-on-1 rush at 3:40 of the first period.

The Sabres tied it after catching Washington on a change. Robert Hagg fed Hinostroza behind the Capitals defense and he beat Vanecek with a glove-side wrist shot at 13:48.

Buffalo took a 2-1 lead when Butcher joined the odd-man rush and converted a centering pass from Rasmus Asplund at 2:09 of the second period for his first goal of the season.

Washington tied it 2-2 at 5:41 of the third period when Ovechkin, in the left circle, fed back to Fehervary for the slap shot from the top of the circle. Fehervary was playing after leaving Friday's game in the second period with an upper-body injury.

Luukkonen robbed Sheary with a pad save at 12:51 of the period to maintain the tie.
