Dubois, Blue Jackets hand Hurricanes first loss

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored 1:15 into the third period as the Columbus Blue Jackets handed the Carolina Hurricanes their first loss of the season with a 3-2 decision Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.

It also was the first victory in regulation for the Blue Jackets, who were in their fifth game.

Markus Nutivaara and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored earlier for Columbus. Ryan Murray and Alexander Wennberg both had two assists for the Blue Jackets, who notched more than two goals for only the second time this season.

Erik Haula, who scored his team-leading fifth goal, and Dougie Hamilton scored for Carolina. Hamilton, a defenseman, has a career-long four-game goal streak.

The Hurricanes had been 5-0-0, the best start in franchise history. They went with an extra skater for the final two minutes but couldn't convert despite some solid scoring chances.

Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo made 30 saves, including 11 in the third period.

Carolina goalie James Reimer stopped 32 shots.

A turnover by Carolina's Brock McGinn led to Dubois' partial breakaway for his second goal of the season. The tally broke a 2-2 tie.

The Hurricanes, who won't play another home game for two weeks, won three one-goal outcomes to open the season before two more comfortable victories.

The Blue Jackets scored at 10:17 of the first when Nutivaara was left alone in front of the crease and easily directed the puck into the net off a pass from Murray. It was Nutivaara's first goal of the season.

Twenty-seven seconds later, Haula scored with a wrister in the slot, set up by Ryan Dzingel's pass, to knot the game at 1-1.

Hamilton's goal came at 2:51 of the second as he waited for a long rebound and unleashed a shot without a defender nearby.

This time, it was the Blue Jackets' turn for a quick response, with Bjorkstrand scoring 17 seconds later.

Both teams were coming off games Friday night. This was only the second road game for Columbus across its first six outings.
