Two teams that are struggling to find wins will face off tonight as the Minnesota Twins host the Chicago White Sox for the start of a four-game series.

Minnesota won just one of its last seven games but is still favored over lowly Chicago, who is just 1-9 in its last 10.

With both teams desperately needing to turn things around, I’ll break down this matchup for bettors in my White Sox vs Twins picks for April 22 — providing you with my favorite MLB picks.

My analysis

The Chicago White Sox have been the worst team in the majors this year. Not only do they have the worst record in the league, but their run differential of -71 is 16 runs worse than the next-lowest team (the Colorado Rockies).

Chicago’s biggest problem has been scoring. Somehow, the White Sox have only 45 runs for the entire season after 21 games, a pathetic average of just 2.14 per outing.

Chicago has at least seen some offense peak out in its last two games, scoring a grand total of seven runs against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend. Having Eloy Jimenez back from his adductor injury seems to have helped a bit, as any lengthening of the lineup will make a huge impact right now.

Thankfully for the White Sox, the Minnesota Twins haven’t been much better. Minnesota is averaging just 3.35 runs per game and holds the third-worst record in the American League.

Tonight, Minnesota will send Chris Paddack to the mound. Paddack has struggled to stay healthy over the last few years, missing most of 2023 due to recovery from Tommy John surgery. As a result, he's only made eight starts over the last three seasons.

Paddack has never been a frontline starter in the majors, going just 22-22 with a 4.38 ERA for his career, one that has spanned just 349.1 innings of work over six seasons. He also hasn’t looked great for Minnesota so far in 2024, putting up an 8.36 ERA over 14 innings of work in his first three starts. In his last outing, the Orioles hit him for nine runs on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

It would be stunning if the White Sox could do that much work against him, but chances are they’ll be able to put up a few runs. And with 23-year-old rookie Jonathan Cannon on the mound for Chicago — who went five innings and allowed just one run in his first career start last week against the Royals — Chicago has a starter who could confound an underwhelming Twins lineup.

Chicago is still the underdog in this game, but the moneyline — especially after bettors moved it significantly in Minnesota’s direction — is way off. If the White Sox can win any game, it’s this one tonight. I’m taking them on the moneyline to pull off the upset.

Eloy Jiminez to record a hit

The White Sox have value tonight because their offense should finally have some success against Paddack. That’s why I also like the Over tonight for a same-game parlay.

We can also include a bet on Eloy Jimenez to get a hit. While Jimenez is hitting just .167 on the year, he has three hits in the last two games and looks to finally be finding his rhythm at the plate.
