Giants vs Rays Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Today's MLB Game

Logan Webb is a legitimate ace but occasionally runs into trouble because he pitches to contact. Our betting picks like the Rays to get back on track offensively after a fairly up-and-down start to the season for their bats.

The Tampa Bay Rays are trending in the right direction with five wins in their last six games, and they’ll look to stay hot against the faltering San Francisco Giants today.

The pitchers were on top in yesterday’s low-scoring matchup, and Amed Rosario’s RBI double in the third inning was the difference in Tampa Bay’s 2-1 victory.

That loss dropped the Giants to 5-9 and they turn to Logan Webb today against Rays starter Ryan Pepiot in a showdown that the latest MLB odds have as a coin flip. Check out my Giants vs. Rays predictions for April 13 for our MLB picks.

Giants vs Rays prediction

My best bet
Rays team total Over 3.5 (-115 at bet365)

My analysis

Nothing has come easily this month for the Tampa Bay Rays, with their last five wins coming by two runs or fewer. But they’ve done just enough to paper over bullpen woes and some tough outings at the plate.

I’m picking the Tampa Bay offense to show more signs of life today. The hosts start the weekend with a .251 batting average (12th in the majors) and just inside the Top 10 in hits, but it’s been hot and cold, with the Rays scoring five or more runs in just four of their April outings.

Though that’s a decent platform, it’s reasonable to expect a bump in those numbers to be just around the corner. The Rays were third in batting average, fourth in runs, and fifth in hits in 2023.

The talent is there — even Brandon Lowe on the 10-day IL with an oblique injury. Harold Ramirez had three hits in Friday's win and the top of the order tucked in against the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the week.

Though Randy Arozarena is the only Tampa Bay hitter who’s faced Logan Webb, the San Francisco Giants starter gave up 10 hits in his last start and has a 4.86 ERA across his three appearances in 2024. Webb only made it through 3 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week.

I like these odds for their bats to do some damage here against a hurler who tends to pitch to a ton of contact.

Giants vs Rays same-game parlay (SGP)

Rays TT Over 3.5

Yandy Diaz Over 1.5 total bases

Ryan Pepiot Over 6.5 strikeouts

Run production for the Rays starts with Yandy Diaz in the leadoff spot. It’s been a slow start for Diaz, who’s hitting .196 through 14 games, though he does have 10 RBI. Still, this feels like a mini dip in form for a hitter who posted a .330 batting average with 35 doubles and 22 home runs in 2023.

I’m also putting my faith in Ryan Pepiot, who the Rays acquired in the trade that sent Tyler Glasnow to the Dodgers. He’s only got 12 career starts under his belt, but he delivered a lights-out performance against the Colorado Rockies last weekend, with six shutout innings and 11 strikeouts.

Giants vs Rays spread and Over/Under analysis

  • While the MLB odds have today’s matchup as too close to call, the Rays were 53-28 at home in 2023 and I’m wary about trusting the visitors’ wobbling offense.
  • Despite a strong 3.25 ERA last year, Webb finished with an 11-13 record from his 33 starts.
  • Runs were hard to come by on Friday, as the Giants went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, so the Under is appealing on a line of 7.5.
  • San Francisco has gone seven games without hitting a home run and required an error and a wild pitch to get on the scoreboard in Friday's loss. The visitors have only posted more than three runs once in their past seven contests.
