Sports bettors in the Badger State received welcoming news this week as the expansion of legal sports betting is taking shape.

Work to bring a second retail sportsbook to the state — and the first in Milwaukee — at the Potawatomi Casino is underway, thanks to an agreement between Forest County Potawatomi and Governor Tony Evers.

Plans released Monday show that a recently approved sportsbook will replace the Northern Lights Theatre and the Fire Pit Sports Bar & Grill.

"This is a transformational time at Potawatomi Casino Hotel," Potawatomi CEO Dominic Ortiz said. “For more than three decades, we have served as a leader in Tribal gaming. With the addition of sports betting, we’ll be providing our guests with even more options and welcoming new visitors to the property and the Menomonee Valley.”

While construction is ongoing, the casino will have 17 sports betting kiosks open 24 hours a day in two different locations inside the casino in the coming weeks.

All bets must be placed within Potawatomi Casino as there are no online sports betting sites otherwise at the property.

Limited wagering in Wisconsin

Currently, sports betting in Wisconsin is only allowed through Native American tribes. Oneida Casino in Green Bay is currently the only other retail option in the state where legal bets can be placed.

Bettors can also use a mobile sports betting app through Oneida Nation that only allows wagers on its lands at affiliated sports betting venues, which also includes IMAC Casino, West Mason Casino, and seven tribal-owned truckstops.

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community announced last November an amendment was made to allow the Native American tribe to offer retail and mobile sports betting at its Mole Lake Casino and other tribal lands by next month’s Super Bowl. Other tribes are also working with the state, which must approve amendments, to bring more sports betting options.
