Georgia this year, ICE reopened the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla. That facility, previously an ICE detention center managed by the private prison company LaSalle Corrections, had closed in 2021 amid allegations of medical abuse against the women held there, according to a bipartisan Senate investigation.

And in Michigan, the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, owned by the private prison company GEO Group, has closed and reopened several times over the last few decades.

In the late '90s, North Lake was a juvenile detention facility. The University of Michigan documented allegations of understaffing, medical neglect and abuse during that time.

Later, it became a federal prison. During COVID, prisoners there held hunger strikes, alleging inadequate food and medical care, and a vindictive use of solitary confinement.

It closed in 2022 after the Biden administration banned privately owned prisons in the federal system. But this past June, North Lake opened again — this time, as an ICE facility.

"There are all these echoes of past injustices and so much of what we're hearing right now from people held there is exactly the same," says JR Martin, a member of the advocacy group No Detention Centers in Michigan.

Jose Contreras Cervantes was detained at North Lake this fall. He was arrested during a traffic stop on suspicion of being in the U.S. without authorization. Contreras Cervantes has a wife and three young children, and he also has leukemia.

He says he told officials he was taking oral chemotherapy pills. But for nearly a month, he says he did not receive them, according to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Michigan. When the chemotherapy pills did start coming, they were inconsistent, and sometimes he wouldn't receive his nausea pills, so he would vomit up the chemo regimen. He worried his cancer would spread.

Russian court orders Austrian bank to pay compensation
The largest Western bank still operating in Russia has been ordered to pay nearly $400m in compensation for losses incurred by Russian company Rasperia due to European sanctions.

Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) said in a statement that the sum – 339 million euros – reflected the amount frozen in Vienna and that it would appeal the ruling.

In March, RBI had already confirmed that it had to pay more than two billion euros ($2.34bn) in damages to Rasperia, an investment company.

According to Washington and Brussels, Rasperia is linked to the Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska, who has been under Western sanctions since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

We have policies in place limiting the enrollment of students to the only law university in Maine . We overwhelmed so many public defenders with case loads they can't even read every discovery we limited courts seal records and don't provide discovery till days before trial.

Our bail system is a county by county concern as well as sentencing and procedures are to hold in the worst county jail till inmates accept any deal to get to Maine prison systems.....

It is the way our relationship injustice system works here. We have the highest percentage of public assistance for poor because our system destroys families.....

The system created is gross and this ruling will have consequences as that Judge will most likely be removed and not reaffirmed to that position....

We identify six signals that prominently appear in the data of GJ 251, and confirm the first as a planet (14 days), four as stellar activity related (68, 73, 122, and 133 days), and one as likely planetary (54 days).

GJ 251’s proximity to Earth and its favorable spectral type make it a prime target for future direct imaging missions on next generation telescopes, and it is a particularly valuable northern target.

Because GJ 251 c orbits in the HZ of a nearby star, it is likely one of the most promising places to search for biosignatures with next generation telescopes. We show using climate simulations that temperate surface conditions could exist on GJ 251 c, and we highlight spectral features that may be observed via direct imaging.
