Another perfect example again tonight. Over half the games where the team leading in the 8th Inning ended up losing or giving up a substantial # of runs and barely won because of the Bullpen blowing the save opportunity
1. White Sox. Led 5-4 in 8th and won 6-5 in 11th
2. Mariners. Led 5-3 in 8th and lost 7-5 in 11th
3. Indians. Led 3-1 in 9th and lost 4-3 in 9th
4. Red Sox. Led 2-0 in 8th and won 2-1 in 9th
5. Dodgers. Led 4-1 in 8th and won 4-3 in 9th
6. Reds. Led 3-2 in 8th and lost 4-3 in 10th
7. Mets. Led 7-0 in 8th and barely won 8-6 in 9th
8. Brewers. Led 8-2 in 8th and won 8-5 in 9.
Granted, some of those games were won by the team leading in the 8th, but some in extra innings and most barely winning because the BP gave up substantial leads that made it much closer than it should have been.
If I were a starting pitcher with the lead in the 8th, I would pull a Jack Morris and not give up the ball for fear of my BP losing the game for me.
I can see it happening occasionally, but for half the games on a daily slate- that's unfathomable and completely unacceptable for these overpaid "professional closers"
Just my opinion, but curious if others feel the same way. And not just from a gambling situation, just from a fan of the game.
