FLIGHT 93 PHONE CALLS
A lot of the facts about the phone calls posted here are incorrect.
"Ultimately, 37 phone calls were made. 17 of them were successful,
meaning that about 46% of the calls placed from the plane were actually
successful."
It's important to note that multiple calls were NOT successful.  Many were short in duration, suggesting that the call may have been
dropped. To say that these calls were executed to perfection is just
plain wrong, and saying that the calls are impossible is even more
wrong.
"Successful cell phone calls were placed at 9:50 by Sandra Bradshaw, 9:49
by Marion Britton, 9:58 by Edward Felt, and 9:30, 9:37 and 9:44 by Tom
Burnett. Why is this important, you may ask? The fact of the matter is
that there is some question as to whether cell phone calls can be
successfully made at high altitudes.
Professor A.K. Dewdney ran four "laps" around London, Ontario airspace
and only climbed to an elevation of 8,000 feet. He extrapolated his
results beyond 8,000 feet up to 32,000 feet, not to mention he
extrapolated his location to Pennsylvania! How do we know that the
service area is the same in London, Ontario as it is in Pennsylvania?

There are a few comments about whether cell phone calls should be able to work above 30,000 feet:

  "According
to industry experts, it is possible to use cell phones with varying
success during the ascent and descent of commercial airline flights,
although the difficulty of maintaining a signal appears to increase as
planes gain altitude. Some older phones, which have stronger
transmitters and operate on analog networks, can be used at a maximum
altitude of 10 miles, while phones on newer digital systems can work at
altitudes of 5 to 6 miles. A typical airline cruising altitude would be
35,000 feet, or about 6.6 miles."
From another article...
Downs, a software salesman, learned of the terrorist attacks while on a
commercial flight returning home from South America. The captain
explained that "terrorist attacks on airplanes" meant they were making
an emergency landing. People on board using cell phones soon discovered
the true nature of the day's events.

"We found out from people
using their phones that the World Trade Center was hit, and some
unspecified area in Washington," Downs recalls.
Well isn't that interesting.  I wonder if these cell phone calls ON AN AIRPLANE were "faked" as well.
And from another article...
...we were forced to make an emergency landing in Cleveland because
there were reports that a bomb or hijacking was taking place on our
plane. The pilot had radioed that there was suspicious activity in the
cabin since one of the passengers was speaking urgently on his cellphone
and ignored repeated flight attendant requests to stop using his cell
phone while in flight.
WHAT?!?!
Another cell phone on another AIRPLANE?????  Man the government sure
produced a lot of fake calls on 09/11.  Oh, I almost forgot, the man on
that plane was arrested when the plane landed.  Interesting.  Arrested
for the government faking a phone call.
Yet another article, not from 09/11, but an airplane and a cellphone...
...The pilot indicated that he may be overflying the cloud tops. He
did not file a flight plan. The pilot's wife was driving to the same
location and they talked by cell phone while en route. When the pilot
failed to arrive at the destination a search was started. According to
radar data, the aircraft was at 15,400 feet when it started a rapid
descent. Radar was lost at 11,800 feet. Witnesses reported seeing the
aircraft descending near vertically out of broken clouds with the engine
at full power. When the aircraft was found, the right outboard wing
panel from about station 110 outboard was missing. About a month later
the outer wing panel was found. Analysis of the failed structure
indicated a positive overload of the wing and the horizontal
stabilators.
Wait!  He was in a plane and could actually use a cell phone?!?!?!  This happened in 1996.  So the government laid some mighty fine ground work for 09/11/01
Smido
would have you believe there is less than a half percent chance those
calls were made.  Interesting.  Cell phones worked on planes prior to
09/11 and also worked on planes (even ones not involved in the attacks)
on that day.  You would think someone who lost a family member on 09/11
would have a little more respect for those who also suffered the same
horrible fate.  He is essentially calling those killed on that day, and
their families, liars.  Absolutely disgusting.
