I’d love to know the statistics on teams that are in a critical short yardage situation that choose to call a shotgun snap run play. It’s pure insanity to snap the ball multiple yards backwards and hand off to a running back who is standing still with zero momentum. All the while, the defense is swarming the line of scrimmage to gain an advantage over the blockers. From what I’ve seen in my life, this concept is a complete failure the majority of the time. 4th down and less than a yard is a qb sneak of some sort with a success rate of over 80%. You don’t even have to think about it, just make the call.
