True its a game of runs but the wild fluctuations in lead changes is due to the three point domination of the game. Fast breaks end up with three point shot attempts and it's been trending this way since 2000s with the run and gun Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic with Dwight Howard.

When you are hot you are hot when you are not you are not. You can run someone off the floor or go cold and lose momentum and ultimately the game.
