Yamamoto came up very small under the bright lights on center stage. Only a very few players come alive in those big games and not always is it the superstars.
Ted Williams and Willie Mays had underwhelming world series' stats for example. Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle thrived under the bright lights...they had 39 and 40 RBIs respectively.

Mays was in 21 World Series games and had zero home runs, 6 RBIs, and batted .230. He had the one great catch that everyone raves about, yep and he deserves praise. Some think Mays twirled around and threw the ball home when in fact he was throwing towards second base.
Now if my Roberto Clemente was out there, he could have thrown it home. Mays had a good arm, not the best arm, that was Clemente above all others. Mays was a great regular season player but his world series' numbers are underwhelming.
Ted Williams was only in one world series (1946) and he was even worse. They say he played injured but he didn't use that as an excuse. He batted .200 with zero home runs, 5 hits (all singles) and 1 rbi. Williams was a great regular season player too, my uncles used to tell me he was the best hitter they ever saw.
