Haircut Gratuity ?

So on Saturday my girl who does my hair was off sick and I had a newbie. No big deal, hot as hell so I said what the hell...She talked the whole 20 minutes or so about everything and gave me a good cut..

So she gives me the same cut as always and I think the total was like 16 or something. I give her a 20 and say keep the change. She immediately changed her tone gave me this weird look and turned around to the back of the shop...

Was 4 dollars on a guy's haircut not enough?

Mine comes to $30 and I usually give $6 to $10 depending on how generous I feel so 20% or so I think is decent.

I get my haircut at a place that I believe provides the best haircutting experience ever.  Its $12 and mostly middle aged women who have been cutting hair for awhile. 

There are individual TVs at each stylist booth and you get your own remote.  They have some massage thing they do to your shoulders and neck for 5 minutes before the haircut.  Then they cut your hair and there is an unspoken agreement that they don't talk to you so you can watch TV.  The haircut is always solid and its only $12.  I usually give 18-20 b/c I think thats what a haircut should cost

She does do the whole shampoo thing and beard cleanup and all, but still I'm tipping on the "bill" of 16.00

If I had an LCD TV with ESPN News on and those MILF's all day, I'd never leave!

Funny -I got a haircut from my stylist today and she gave me 10% off..
 
$32 -charged 28.. gave her 7 bucks -25% tip..
 
The first time she had to reschedule as she was sick ..
 
$32 -got charged 24 .. gave her 8 bucks ..
 
she's smokin hot and cool too..
 
My barber -it's 18, I give 23 ..

Yeah, not exactly milfs.  Two of 7 are milfs but fuck it.  I get a shoulder massage, a head wash and massage plus a cut while watching ESPN.  I'd do it every day if my hair would grow fast enough

I agree with NJ Devils. $4 is too much in my book. This was probably just another ungrateful chick who thinks she is owed something. But what do you expect with America's greed driven society? Tipping is another American created money grabbing scheme. In Europe I don't even think they do this. I got yelled at by one guy when I was in Kiev for giving a tip at a restaurant, saying we don't do that here. So I learned quickly as I didn't want to piss anyone off. I don't believe tipping is commonplace in other European cities either, although I am not familiar with each individual place and its associated customs, so I don't want to make a generalized statement that may not be true.  When in Rome do as the Romans do, as the saying goes.
 
Oh I did tip in Canada though, because out of habit it is done here and I am brainwashed and I just assumed it would be done there as well. If I shouldn't be doing this in Canada, please set me straight.

Unless you live out here in Vegas and work for tips. My girl charges me $25 for the cut. I leave her $40 every time. You never know when she is gonna come strolling in your bar with that $15 tip and hit a jackpot in your bar and slide a $100-$200 tip right back at ya.

First of all a $30 haircut is absolutely ridiculous.

Second a $4 tip is PLENTY for a haircut.  When I used to go to the barber the cuts were $18 and I gave $20 and they would never complain and were always real nice and talkative.

I bought a hair trimmer about 2 years ago and have been shaving/cutting my own hair ever since.  Have probably saved a couple hundred bucks already and it is faster and more convenient.

How much does a barber make in his own shop? Does he keep the money you pay for it and the tip? Or a portion of  the price? I was curious about this. My haircut is 10 bucks. I usally give 12-14.

It's all relative and pretty much all comes down to what kind of salon or shop your in. If you are in a high class place, tip accordingly. If your in a cheap place ($20 or less), then its a matter of your comfortability, I mean basically the girls work on tips very muck like a restaurant and draw a small salary, but think about it...if your a waitress, you may wait on 10 tables in an hour, if you cut hair, how many clients do you have? 2 maybe 3 in an hour? I go to Great Clips, a cheap place...my haircut is $12 and I leave the whole $20 bill, it may seem high if comparing it to a regular gratuity but so be it. That said, the $4 tip was fine...she should not have acted like such a box

For those of you guys that are under 50 years old and actually give a shit about what you look like, do you really still go to a BARBER? These guys are old, senile, and have no sense of style. The have been "taking 2 inches off" since 1956. Do you self a favor and go get a real haircut. Take a little pride in your appearance and it may just improve the quality of your life.
