I often just lay back here and listen to opinions, but I have to ask this. There are some of you who are all about playing horrible teams like Portland St or Long Beach St or whoever. My question is, have you ever even seen these drek teams play? Unless you're from that area, I imagine you have not, and even if you are from the area they're probably not on much, if ever. I dont get how someone can say (with confidence) that these teams are such a worthy wager.
I just dont understand how you can wager your hard earned $ on crap teams with crap talent when you never see them actually play, while there are big program teams all over the betting card. At least you can watch these teams play and develop a real opinion on them. Me betting on a Portland St would kind of be like me betting on some soccer game in Italy.
Not telling you guys what to do, or how to bet, I just dont understand so many of the threads I see on here regarding crap Big West or Big Sky or Big South teams claiming to be some great bet. When crap teams play crap teams, crap results happen, these teams can just easily win by 25 or lose outright, I just dont see any reason to bother handicapping these unknown garbage squads when I can find 10-15 games on the card that involve teams I actually see with my own eyes...

Man sometimes, you learn though if you lose by betting on a garbage team. It's all a process I think, if you never betted on those crap teams from time to time, would you even know they suck? Man all of this gambling gives me insight, and after about the 1st few weeks should have a good read on these teams. But yeah, betting on crap teams on a consistent basis will kill your bank roll.

There's people out there betting 10K a game who probably can't name a single player in college basketball. They've created sophisticated computer programs that spit out numbers so watching the game is pointless to them.

I disagree with this thread in a way. If a capper knows one of these "crap" teams inside out don't you think there could be better value in a line? I sure as hell don't believe that the oddsmakers are paying too much attention to these small schools. I guess what I am trying to say is that there is more value to be found in smaller "crap" teams if one knows them rather than inflated lines from all of the popular powerhouse schools, which probably have inflated lines?

Just sayin.
Because you look at every game from a situational standpoint. And watch the line movement. You don't have to watch the team to make a play on a let down spot or to fade.

because small schools or "crap" schools as you call them are where the value lies throughout the season, do this long enough and you will find the "sexy" matchups have much sharper lines and are not as easy to cap imo....with as many media outlets there are now days you can pretty much watch at least some of almost any team and get all the information you could possibly want, not that it matters as they can be capped solely by the numbers as the season goes along...personally i like to mix but have 4 "crap" conferences i follow very close every year and they always are more profitable to me than the big boys, but different strokes for different folks i guess....GL with the season...

Not all mid-majors are crap schools. I'm not saying to disregard teams from the MVC, Southern, CAA, Horizon etc. These leagues often have a couple teams that can ball. I'm speaking to the Big South, Big Sky namely, conferences like that...
I also dont believe in betting by 'computer program', I will place my $ where my own eyes tell me to place it, not some statistical BS. Sure, I know 'systems' work for some but how is that even fun, besides stats can be very, very misleading. Your eyes usually do not deceive you.

I disagree with you. While I have seen many teams play, hardcore statistical analysis, trends, matchups, styles of play, analysis of strengths and weaknesses and having a full understanding of a team's roster is more than enough to make a well informed decision in many cases.
When you buy a stock, have you been to that company's corporate headquarters, interviewed the CEO or its officers and directors or have you just analyzed their corporate profile, their financial data and read up on the company?
How is that any different than doing your homework on teams?

VERY WELL said. Bottom line is bet what you are comfortable with and know. It is YOUR money that you are wagering........

That pretty much takes care of that. Well said and totally agree

More power to you guys. Hopefully you dont have too many situations where you say to yourself, "damn why'd I let the dumb computer talk me into betting that scrub team".

Yea, if you're an idiot. Winning under those circumstances in just blind luck then. Why not just go to the damn casino and play roulette? Dont you like to have some personal input into what you're betting on?

Again I ask, if I research all statistics, matchups, trends and research their rosters thoroughly, how is it any different than researching a company and looking at their financial statements when I invest in stocks? In fact, this is just recreational and we should just be playing around with our spare change but when it comes to stocks and portfolios, it's about out entire future and retirement.

I get your point, but like you said this is for RECREATION aka fun, why would you wanna take all the fun out of it by strictly wagering based on a computer program? What are we, robots?
You're comparing apples and oranges. Stocks and portfolios are all about numbers and bottom lines. Sports are about fun, recreation and numbers dont tell half the story typically. That bouncing basketball has no idea what a trend is.

I hate to state the obvious but these "crap" teams cover games too. It's not like they go 0-25 ATS all season. Purdue, one of the best teams in the country last season, went 14-19 ATS. Meanwhile, a "crap" team in Valparaiso went 17-10 ATS. I find that the bigger conference games are usually the ones with the sharpest lines and it's the mid-major conferences where you find value in soft lines.

OP you couldn't be more wrong. The best lines are found by following and studying these "crap" teams. If you actually read a little, check stats, and do some research you can get the feel for how a team will play during the season. There are so many games in college hoops on the weekends yet you want to only make a play because it involves a Big 6 school?
