Georgia Tech vs Georgia Odds, Picks and Predictions: Yellow Jackets Won't Be Blanked in Athens

Despite their record being under .500, the Yellow Jackets have two nationally-ranked wins and should be able to find the scoreboard against Georgia, which may be looking ahead to the SEC title game next weekend — read more below.

Rivalry week continues into Saturday when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-6) meet the No. 1-ranked — and still undefeated — Georgia Bulldogs (11-0).

Georgia Tech finished fourth in the ACC and defeated No. 13 North Carolina last week. Georgia heads into the SEC title game next week and snuck past the Kentucky Wildcats 16-6 last weekend.

What's the best bet in this battle of Georgia? Read our college football picks and predictions below to find out.

Georgia Tech vs Georgia best odds

Georgia Tech vs Georgia picks and predictions

Georgia Tech has scored at least seven points in 10 of their 11 contests this season and with a team total of just 6.5, I like the Over as my best bet.

With wins over two nationally-ranked teams, this isn't a bad football team. Losing QB Jeff Sims hurt and losing QB2 Zach Pyron hurt worse, but the Yellow Jackets deployed a two-quarterback scheme last week with Zach Gibson throwing for 174 yards and Taisun Phommachanh running in for a score against UNC.

Gibson has thrown for 398 yards with a TD pass and two interceptions for a GT offense ranked 12th in total offense and scoring in the ACC.

Georgia Tech has a pair of backs putting in work: senior RB Hassan Hall has scampered for 520 yards and a TD while Dontae Smith has powered his way to 386 yards with five trips to the end zone. Top wideout Nate McCollum missed last week, but Gibson can also lean on Malachi Carter and EJ Jenkins, who have combined for 587 yards and four TD grabs.

The Georgia Bulldogs have the best overall defense in the country. They are No. 1 in defensive DVOA and have allowed a nation's best 11.7 points per game. They lead the SEC in rushing yards allowed along with the third-best passing defense. Opponents have scored just 58 points over their last five games, with Georgia allowing a nation-best 0.82 total first-quarter points.

But while this defense is stout, the Yellow Jackets should be able to score. Georgia is 20th in first downs per offensive drive suggesting the Bulldogs' defense bends but doesn't break. GT will have trouble running the ball but should have much more success through the air. Gibson has completed 55% of his passes, won’t face much of a pass rush, and should be able to find the end zone.

Kicker Gavin Stewart is 12-for-13 on the season, with his only miss coming last week against North Carolina. If Georgia Tech can get Stewart in field-goal range three times — and I believe they will — Stewart will get the job done, pushing the Yellow Jackets over this 6.5-point team total.

My best bet: Georgia Tech team total Over 6.5 (-114 at Pinnacle)

Georgia Tech vs Georgia spread analysis

This contest should be closer than the college football odds are suggesting, so I'm learning towards Georgia Tech and the 35.5 points.

Georgia has plenty on the line Saturday as its undefeated season and No. 1 ranking hangs in the balance. The Bulldogs will emerge triumphant, but winning by 36 points against a team with two Top-25 victories under their belt might be too big an ask.

Stetson Bennet has been solid this season, throwing for 3,011 yards with 14 TD passes, six interceptions with an additional seven rushing TDs. He’s thrown three scoring strikes alongside three interceptions over his past two ballgames and is coming off a 116-yard, one-interception game against Kentucky.

Bennett has a pair of wideouts combining for 1,231 yards and eight TDs. Senior tight end Brock Bowers also has 41 receptions for 625 yards and four TDs and sophomore WR Ladd McConkey has 606 receiving yards and four TD receptions.

The Bulldogs have a solid rushing attack behind the backfield duo of Kenny McIntosh and Daijun Edwards. The two have combined for 1,115 yards and 14 TDs. McIntosh blasted Kentucky for 143 yards and a TD, while Edwards added 50 yards.

Georgia Tech ranks 39th in defensive DVOA and has allowed 136 points over their past five. The Yellow Jackets' defense is 35th in sacks and 29th in interceptions and should be feeling good about themselves after holding a good North Carolina offense to 17 points. If they can stop the run  and I believe they can  Georgia Tech will cover this massive spread.

Georgia Tech is 5-6-0 ATS overall and 3-2-0 ATS as the away team. Meanwhile, Georgia is 5-6-0 ATS and 5-0 ATS at Sanford Stadium.

Georgia Tech vs Georgia Over/Under analysis

The total is 48.5 points in a few places and I’m leaning toward this game going Over the number.

We know Georgia can light up the scoreboard Saturday but the only way Georgia Tech covers the number is if they find the scoreboard a few times.

Georgia has scored 33 points or more in nine of their 11 contests. The Yellow Jackets' defense is above average. Still, they’ve allowed at least 40 points four times this season, and they have a stiff test keeping this game close enough for the offense to win.

Saturday should be a great day for football, with the forecast calling for a partly cloudy day with little wind and no precipitation.

The Over is 3-7-1 through the Yellow Jackets' 11 games and 2-2-1 as the away team. Through Georgia’s 11 games, the Over is 3-8 and 1-4 at Sanford Stadium.
