White Sox vs Angels Picks and Predictions: Ohtani Keeps Carrying Halos

Shohei Ohtani is playing his best baseball on both sides of the ball and that is bad news for opposing teams. He returns to the mound after thoroughly dismantling the Royals last week. We like the Angels and the Over in our betting picks.

White Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Michael Kopech (2-4, 2.59 ERA): Kopech has not looked the same since leaving a game against the Texas Rangers in the first inning on June 12 with a knee injury. He went into that start with a 1.94 ERA, but that figure has since ballooned to 2.59 over his last two outings.

Shohei Ohtani (6-4, 2.90 ERA): Ohtani is fresh off arguably his best start of the season, as he struck out 13 Kansas City Royals over eight scoreless innings last Wednesday. The reigning AL MVP has recorded the win in each of his last three outings and sports a 1.88 ERA in June.

White Sox vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

With Michael Kopech heading downhill and Shohei Ohtani on top of his game, moneyline players should grit their teeth and take the heavy chalk in the Angels on Wednesday night.

Kopech’s last two starts — coming immediately after an early exit due to injury on June 12 — should be setting off alarm bells in the head of every handicapper. He’s surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits and five walks in his last 11 innings of work, compiling a modest six strikeouts in the process.

The Angels’ lineup tends to fan in bunches (most strikeouts in the majors), but they should be able to stay in at-bats against the struggling Kopech, who owns an inflated .223 opponent batting average on the road compared to his .097 figure at home.

Lefties are batting .188 against Kopech compared to a .137 mark for righties, so bettors should also look for Ohtani to build on his three-hit, one-homer outing from Tuesday evening.

On the mound, Ohtani has been as sharp as ever, authoring a 1.88 ERA over four starts in June. He’s kept the ball in the park in each of his last three appearances and raised his strikeout/walk ratio for the season to 90-16 following his 13 punchout performance against the Royals last Wednesday.

Ohtani should keep the Chicago lineup guessing, beginning with Andrew Vaughn, who has cooled off after a hot start in June and now has just one hit in his last 18 at-bats.

Trend bettors should note that the White Sox are 2-5 in their last seven games against right-handed starters, and are 6-23 in their last 29 meetings with the Angels in Los Angeles.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (-189 at Caesars)

Over/Under analysis

With a belabored bullpen on each side of this tilt, Over bettors look poised to cash.

The Angels’ relief corps ranks 18th by ERA on the season at 4.12, while Chicago’s staff checks in 20th at 4.21. L.A.’s lack of bullpen depth could be exposed with the impending loss of several key cogs in this unit — including closer Raisel Iglesias — to suspension following Sunday’s brawl with the Seattle Mariners.

Oliver Ortega — who now owns a 7.27 ERA in June — took the loss on Tuesday after allowing the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning before Elvis Peguero (14.54 ERA) threw gasoline on the fire in the seventh.

The White Sox are still without closer Liam Hendriks and set-up man Aaron Bummer, forcing manager Tony La Russa to put the onus on less capable arms of late.

Matt Foster — tied for the team lead with 10 appearances in June — owns a 12.38 ERA this month. Bennett Sousa has been even worse, with a 14.29 ERA. Even the normally reliable Reynaldo Lopez blew the save for the South Siders on Monday.

Prediction: Over 7.5 (-110 at BetRivers)

Best bet

The Halos’ incredible trio of Taylor Ward, Mike Trout, and Ohtani should lead the early hit parade against Kopech, who tends to start slowly based on his .204 opponent batting average the first time around the order.

Ward is riding a nine-game hitting streak, while Trout is rocking a 1.049 OPS in June following Tuesday’s solo homer. Ohtani is close behind with a .997 OPS this month following Tuesday’s incredible performance.

Chicago should not go quietly though, at least if Jose Abreu has anything to say about it, as the former AL MVP has 10 hits in his last 26 at-bats (.385 average). Not to be outdone is Luis Robert, who has 11 multi-hit games in June.

This game should clear the relatively low total set by oddsmakers by the time the ninth inning comes around.

PickOver 7.5 (-110 at BetRivers)
