Angels vs Blue Jays betting preview

Starting pitchers

Tucker Davidson (2-4, 5.63 ERA): Dealt to the Angels from Atlanta at the trade deadline, Davidson has made three starts for the Halos this season. The left-hander's previous outing came on August 22, lasting five innings against the Rays and allowing six hits and two earned runs . The 26-year-old southpaw primarily relies on a fastball/slider combo.

Ross Stripling (6-3, 2.84 ERA): Stripling is currently in the midst of his best season since his All-Star campaign with the Dodgers in 2018 . The right-hander's BB% is elite and ranks in the 96th percentile according to Baseball Savant, plus he's generating a chase rate that is currently in the 90th percentile. Over 95.0 innings of work this season, the 32-year-old has allowed just six home runs.

Angels vs Blue Jays picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Blue Jays have been outscored by the Angels 14-0 in the last two games, as the Halos' pitching staff has completely taken the air out of the crowd in Toronto.

David Fletcher has been the x-factor for the Angels over the first two games, accounting for six hits and four RBI. The Halos' second baseman has only appeared in 39 games this season, but has been a steady option at the leadoff spot for Los Angeles when healthy.

Despite Jared Walsh and Taylor Ward now hurt, both bats have been cold in the second half of the season following the Angels strong start to the year. The combination of Fletcher, Shohei Ohtani, and a returning Mike Trout still gives the Angels a fighting chance offensively going forward.

Even if Ross Stripling is able to put in a strong performance, he will be pulled before the Halos' order comes around for a third time as he tends to be vulnerable to hitters at that point. The Jays also used their two best relievers in yesterday's loss, and that could come back to haunt them on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Toronto will be without former Silver Sugger Teoscar Hernandez as the right-fielder continues to deal with a foot contusion. The Jays definitely could've used Hernandez on Saturday, as Cavan Biggio hit in the fifth spot in order during that game.

That should cause concern for Jays fans, as Biggio has been a utility bench player all year long. When he does start, he's usually hitting last in the lineup.

Hernandez's absence on Sunday should especially hurt Toronto on Sunday with a southpaw like Davidson starting. This means a weak left-handed bat in Jackie Bradley Jr. or Raimel Tapia will see playing time instead.

Home field hasn't been much of an advantage to the Jays lately, as they're 1-4 in their last five at the Rogers Centre. Look for that record to take another hit on Sunday.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (+190 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

Following yesterday's low-scoring affair that featured a pitching duel between Ohtani and Alek Manoah, I'm expecting the complete opposite in the final game of the season between these two ballclubs.

Tucker Davidson is far from an ace, and will most likely only go five innings or so. He'll then be making way for a below-average Angels' bullpen that's currently without both Ryan Tepera and Aaron Loup.

While Stripling has been fantastic for Toronto this year, the Blue Jays aren't using him late into games for a reason. And with the Jays having used their two highest-leverage relievers in Anthony Bass and Yimi Garcia on Saturday, the Angels will get the chance to tee off of an otherwise weak bullpen.

The Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings at the Rogers Centre, and I fully expect it to follow that trend in this one.

Prediction: Over 9.0 (-105 at bet365)

Best bet

Since returning to Los Angeles' lineup on August 19, Mike Trout is only hitting .258/.303/.548 in 10 games. No reason to panic, as I fully expect the 30-year-old to look like his former self in this game.

The future Hall-of-Famer has dominated Ross Stripling in the past, and I'm all over the superstar outfielder to be the genesis of the Halos' offense on Sunday.

In 11 career at bats against Stripling, Trout is slashing .636/.667/.1.545 with four extra-base hits and three home runs. Considering Stripling is a low BB pitcher, I'm not concerned about Trout drawing his usual share of walks and the total bases prop falling short.

Bank on Trout to put the ball in play early against the Jays' starter in the series finale.

Pick: Mike Trout Over 1.5 total bases (-120 at bet365)
