The Belmont Stakes is the third and final jewel in horse racing’s Triple Crown, presenting a unique challenge to the top three-year-old contenders with a distance of 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs).

That increase in distance also presents a tough test for those betting on the 2023 Belmont Stakes, as horses that had success in the shorter Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes can struggle in the longer “Test of the Champion.”

If you want to place a wager on the 155th Belmont Stakes tonight, here are some simple tips and tactics to help you make smart bets.

Time and place

  • Date: Saturday, June 10, 2023
  • Post time: 7:02 p.m. ET
  • Place: Belmont Park in Elmont, New York

Odds

The odds to win the 2023 Belmont Stakes were released when the posts were drawn on Tuesday, with Forte being installed as the 5/2 morning-line favorite by NYRA oddsmaker David Aragona. Tapit Trice, seventh in the Kentucky Derby last time out, is the 3/1 second choice in the wagering. Derby favorite Angel of Empire is the third choice at 7/2, followed by 2023 Preakness champion National Treasure at 5/1.

Horses

In 2022, a field of eight horses ran in the Belmont Stakes. The biggest Belmont Stakes field was 15 horses in 1983.

To qualify for the Belmont Stakes, a thoroughbred horse must be three years old. Colts carry 126 pounds, while fillies are given a five-pound weight allowance. All potential contenders must be nominated to the Triple Crown series, and must pay $30,000 in entry and starter fees to run in the race.

Results

Once the race at Belmont Park is done, the most important information to bettors is the results: Which horses finished in the Top 3, and how much did those wagers pay out? Our Belmont Stakes results guide will be updated immediately following the race and contains tons of historical information.

Belmont Stakes history

This year’s event will be the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes, making it the oldest of the three Triple Crown races. That means plenty of history is behind “The Test of the Champion." See a full list of every Belmont Stakes winner ever, fastest times and more on our Belmont Stakes results page.

Distances

The Belmont Stakes is the longest of the Triple Crown races at 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs) since 1926, when it was increased from a mile and three furlongs. The 2020 Belmont Stakes was raced at 1 1/8 miles after the Triple Crown order was shuffled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making the Belmont the first race instead of the third.

Triple Crown road

The Belmont Stakes is the final challenge for any horse contending for the Triple Crown after winning both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. However, there is no Triple Crown hopeful heading into the 2023 Belmont.

There have been 13 Triple Crown champions that come through Belmont Park, while 18 horses have won both the Preakness and the Belmont but not the Derby. Eleven horses have won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes but not the Preakness.

Fastest Belmont

The record for the fastest 1 1/2-mile time in the Belmont Stakes belongs to famed Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who ran the 12 furlongs in 2:24 back in 1973.

Belmont Park

Belmont Park in Elmont, New York is one of the most famed and historic racetracks in the world, opening on May 4, 1905. The primary 1 1/2-mile dirt track is nicknamed “Big Sandy,” and the park can hold approximately 90,000 spectators with seating for 32,941.
