Believe it was coming off the 2016 season , Mitchell Trubisky love was swelling and Larry fedora was the next “ guy” , doesn’t leave nc, next season team is awful , believe the following he’s fired. Now I don’t see Matt Campbell getting fired, but this past draft they 6 players drafted, Brock & breese we’re two of the best talents I can ever remember coming the Aimes. I don’t think it’s unrealistic that they slip to barely or missing a bowl game, and a season or two this takes him out of that next up pool, thereby fedora ing himself.

The big diff with Fedora after having a good run with Trubisky is he was really unliked there for various things he did / said, think he pissed off the media/admin one too many times .. chips weren't just down on the field they were wayyyy down .. made firing him all the easier i'd guess .. Totally diff in Aims, Campbell has the Pat Fitzgerald franchise tag, they would never get rid of him barring some massive scandal .. that's half the reason he'd be considered at the big programs besides taking 2 / 3 star guys and turning around the program to compete for championships ..
Plus when you hire Larry its kinda like Hiring Kiffin, you're really hiring the HC and OC but there's no top DC attached you'll be looking for a new one every year or two .. not many of those out there .. and if you don't like the offense you gotta fire the HC!! .. makes sense Kiff has bounced around so many times ... Deal w Campbell seems alot like getting a Dabo, real company man at the top and the long time coordinators (hopefully) sticking around to build the program .. but could also replace if necessary ..
Maybe ND or USC type of programs not calling next year if things go too far south but he's got alot of years to turn the motor back on .. not sure what out performing expectations would look like next year but go on a little run pull a big upset and make a bowl .. not sure why a major program isin't still calling with all the real big money dud coaching deals out there ..

I think Campbell and Iowa St have an agreement that he gets a very long leash since he decided to be loyal to them..he should have jumped ship while his stock was high.. 6-6 and the chezit bowl with the occasional 8-3 is fine with them.

Possible I suppose but I don't even know what the window was for him after 2020 or this year.. sounded like alot of NFL and big job rumors .. maybe he just turned them down quick or maybe teams already had their guy ... I dont know if he interviewed for USC but I think they woulda gone with a splash hire like Riley .. did sound like he wanted ND but not sure it was really all that open, they were in a tough spot and they liked Freeman so why chance losing him just make a quick hire ..
I guess he risks having a flop this year but easy for them to exceed expectations .. 7/8 wins and I think he'll be on the same caliber of lists he's been on before (whatever those were) .. Even if its a dud he's got Mike Gundy Time to right the ship there .. I think the bigger risk maybe losing Heacock although it sounds like he actually turned down Freeman to be the ND DC .. Guy's 61 and cashed alot of small school assistant paychecks ... Think he was also caught on a hot mic at the press conference saying "Sheeeeit Matt, half my players making mp than me, u can't be dickin around too long chasin yo phony dream job kid I gottsa git payyyyyd son, daddy needa eat!!!!!" lol

He needs to find a way to beat Iowa.. but I do think he could have maybe had a few golden opportunities for bigger schools the last few years.. Im not sure how hard schools were pressing to get him but Im sure some of them had to be.

Clones been pretty mum this spring but more I find more I like though .. esp about Hunter Dekkers at QB .. keep him on the radar .. also while they lose a ton of guys keep in mind that ret production was building up a couple years .. so lose alot of production but the replacements aren't new lotta jr's / sr's and some expereince back its not totally depleted units ... also got their huge sack master at DE lotta DL's back couple experienced LB's .. secondary, RB, TE look like the bigger unknowns other than QB of course ... Peep ourlads too really like seeing depth chart they can fill in at this time of year and theirs is deeeep .. compare to coastal's no idea whose even starting alot of spots..
I'm kinda cautiously optimistic esp w the Dekkars talk that would be huge if they actually have a legit dude step in at QB when nobody's expecting much .. def not a team I'm looking to fade outta the cute .. very much on the good radar ..

They have to beat Iowa at some point. If that doesn't happen he will be on the hot seat in 2 years. Paul Rhoades was the golden boy there too back a decade ago and he was canned. There is going to be a drastic drop in terms of how they do this year. 6-6 is very much on the docket for this coming year. I just don't see them in the Baylor, Okie St, Oklahoma, Texas, and even Kansas State class this year. They have a few nice pieces, but mark it that he waited to late and he becomes just another ok coach that missed out. My biggest bet of week 2 will be Iowa vs ISU. That place will be rocking(I believe they missed their game at Iowa 2 years ago because of COVID). Anything under 7 is a gift with a new QB coming in there early in the year.

When Fedora was Gundy's OC at OSU he wasn't well liked there either...Much more respect for Campbell, who also has the advantage of having an excellent coaching staff.

I remember spending time with Fedora(I was being recruited where he was way back in the day).. he was a wired guy at all times, he was definitely eccentric kind of dude. I liked him alright but then again of course I was seeing the best side of him as a recruit. He did know a lot about offense while I was around him and learned from him in a short span

MC since 2017 is #2 in the B12 - 29-17 SU / 27-19 ATS ..... mov 8.8 / +4.8 ats
>> the best ISU will ever be - they'll be fine this year, and likely a team to bet at some point
I believe the more accurate phrase might be getting 'Glen Mason-ed' ... where you take a team as far as you can - but then you hit a wall, and can take them no further - like GM at Minny - he wasn't able to compete long term with B10 royalty.
Humble when ambitious - gracious when successful - resilient when you fail.

Campbell missed it. That ship has sailed. He never overachieved. Iowa State lost every big game they were expected to win. Nothing special about his coaching. His recruiting may be special, but his in game coaching sucks. I wouldn't want him at a big time program that is expected to win every game every week. He is not that type of coach.
