Stampeders vs Redblacks picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Spread analysis

The Redblacks finally earned their first win of the season in a road matchup with a division rival and got a quality performance from backup Caleb Evans, who went 24-of-29 for 286 yards and two scores. Jaelon Acklin was on the receiving end of 144 of those passing yards and added a touchdown reception for the evening. He’s now the CFL’s receiving leader with 687 yards and has surpassed the 100-yard mark in three straight games.

On defense, Ottawa also stepped up to hold Toronto to just 33 yards on 13 carries a week after the Argos racked up 160 on Saskatchewan, which is the league’s best rush defense. Calgary ranks second in rushing yards per game, so we’ll find out if the Redblacks have actually turned a corner on defense or if last Sunday was a fluke.

Ottawa trailed 13-6 with a minute left before halftime, then reeled off 17 unanswered points to upset the home team, who were favored by 5.5 points. The only team to defeat Calgary this season is unbeaten Winnipeg, who handed the Stampeders back-to-back losses in Weeks 6 and 8.

A bye week following the Stampeders’ road setback wasn’t enough to rebound against an unrested Blue Bombers squad. Calgary held a 28-25 advantage midway through the fourth quarter while hosting Winnipeg last week but let the 8-0 Bombers score a touchdown and field goal in the final five minutes to secure a 35-28 victory.

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 21 of 32 passes for 219 yards without a touchdown or interception, but Ka’Deem Carey — second in the league in rushing yards (471) and touchdowns (five) — had a solid outing with 92 rushing yards and a pair of two-yard scores.

The Stamps lost defensive back Tre Roberson and starting center Sean McEwen to injury late in the game, and their absences may cause some trouble for Calgary on Friday night. However, the West’s second-best team isn’t facing a group the caliber of Winnipeg.

Look for the Horsemen to get back on track against an inferior opponent they have beaten in eight of the last 10 meetings.

Prediction: Stampeders -4.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Over/Under analysis

Both Calgary and Ottawa rank in the top four in yards per game, but the Stampeders turn those yards into points. They are averaging 31.5 per contest, the second most in the league.

Ottawa, meanwhile, ranks sixth in points per game with just 21.7. The defenses are comparable as well, with the Stamps allowing 24.5 points per outing (fourth in the CFL) and the Redblacks giving up 25.4 (sixth in the CFL). Both teams struggle to defend the pass, but Ottawa has been particularly bad, allowing the highest QBR and an average of 301 yards through the air to the opposing quarterbacks.

Expect plenty of points on the board in this one as these teams make their way up and down the field with some ease.

Prediction: Over 49.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Best bet

With neither of these defenses particularly strong and Calgary dealing with injuries to its stop unit, Ottawa should put up a fair fight on Friday. The Redblacks scored 23 on Toronto last week and have exceeded 22 points in four of their last five games.

Only Saskatchewan held them below that total in a Week 5 road matchup, in which starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli went down with an injury. With Evans getting comfortable with the offense and showing continued improvement, Ottawa will come out firing and hit Over 22.5 points.

Pick: Redblacks TT Over 22.5 (-108 FanDuel)
