Once upon a time, the Los Angeles Angels were 27-17 and they were finally looking like the legitimate contenders they have been trying to be for years.

They have since lost 12 games in a row and find themselves largely where they have been during those fruitless past seasons — in the middle of the pack and outside of the playoff picture.

Conversely, the Boston Red Sox were floundering through early May with an 11-20 record but have since gone 17-8 and have won five straight. They took the first of four games with the Angels last night with a 1-0 win and will look to keep the ball rolling heading into Tuesday night.

Can the Red Sox keep the ball rolling or will the Angels finally break their painstakingly long losing streak? Find out in our free MLB picks and predictions for Red Sox vs Angels on Tuesday, June 7.

Red Sox vs Angels betting preview

Starting pitchers

Garrett Whitlock (2-1, 3.02 ERA): Whitlock is in his sophomore season following a 2021 campaign that included a 1.46 ERA across 46 appearances. None of those 46 were a start, something that has changed quickly in 2022. Whitlock has been called upon for eight already in 2022 and has had some mixed results, pitching to a 4.34 ERA. He is coming off of a rather solid outing, allowing just five hits and no walks in a shutout six-inning outing against the Reds last week.

Jose Suarez (0-2, 6.11 ERA): Suarez is the unofficial and projected starter for Tuesday's game and his young career has been electric, to say the least. He debuted at the fresh age of 21 in 2019 and pitched to a 7.11 ERA in 19 appearances. After just two starts in 2020, Suarez returned to the rotation last year and pitched to an impressive 3.75 ERA while maintaining a 3.3% walk rate. Things have seemingly gone back off the rails in 2022, with his ERA ballooning to 6.11 and his WHIP sitting as high as 1.87 heading into Tuesday.

Red Sox vs Angels picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

No lengthy losing streak is easy to swallow in baseball, but the Angels' skid stings in particular. The Angels have shown a concentrated effort to contend with their spending in the past few seasons, with high-profile acquisitions like Justin Upton, Shohei Ohtani, and Anthony Rendon.

The results have been mixed on an individual basis, but the results have been rather straightforward on a team level — zero playoff appearances in the last seven seasons. Needless to say, the 2022 season was and is still viewed as a make-or-break season for the ballclub. Having two generational talents in the likes of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani should produce results.

That has certainly not been the case, and the Angels find themselves outside the playoff picture in early June. The good news is there are more than 100 games left to play, but snapping this losing streak and turning the ship around needs to happen as soon as tonight.

The Halos' offense has gone cold, and they will need Jose Suarez to channel his 2021 self on the mound tonight. In 2021, he ranked extremely favorably in average exit velocity (87th percentile), barrel rate (98th), expected batting average (87th), and expected slugging percentage (97th).

This season, Suarez isn't generating as many whiffs (percentile ranking has dropped from 56th to 17th) or getting batters to chase (54th to 17th). That doesn't bode well against a Red Sox team that has won five straight and has scored five or more runs in each of those contests minus, with last night as an exception.

Garrett Whitlock will take the mound for the Red Sox on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old pitched to a 3.02 ERA thus far, largely a result of him finding his comfort zone after shifting from the bullpen to the rotation. If Whitlock can keep up his form from his previous shutout performance against the Reds, both teams are likely to continue in the direction they have been moving in as of late.

Prediction: Red Sox moneyline (-124 at WynnBet)

Over/Under analysis

The Angels have played to a 27-25-4 record towards the Over while the Red Sox have played to a 28-22-5 record to the Under. Despite the lack of offensive production from their two MVPs, the Angels have actually played to the Over rather favorably as of late, going 6-3 that way in their last nine.

Given Boston's broader sample of increased scoring since early May and the fact that Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout will get the bats going eventually, the Over is probably the better proposition.

Throw in the fact that Whitlock has allowed a decent amount of runs in since joining the rotation and Jose Suarez is no stranger to letting opposing offenses plate a healthy share of runs, and you have a formula for a high-scoring affair.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (-118 at Unibet)

Best bet

Baseball is arguably the most metric-friendly sport on the planet and with that comes the potential and ability to dissect a game in an infinite number of ways.

But sometimes, a value proposition stares you in the face on a very fundamental level and it's arguably all you need. On one side you have the Red Sox who have won 17 of their last 25, including their last five. The Angels, on the other hand, have lost a whopping 12 straight largely due to the bats of their two-generational superstars disappearing at the plate during that time.

Additionally, the Red Sox have improved their scoring output from third-worst to fifth-best in the last month. The Angels are projected to call on arguably their worst rotation arm of 2022 so far in Jose Suarez. The Red Sox will send Garrett Whitlock to the mound, who is slowly but surely finding his groove as he transitions to being an everyday starter.

When the going gets tough tonight, Whitlock will hand the ball over to a league-average bullpen (3.89 ERA) while Suarez hands it off to one of the league's worst (4.30 ERA). Call it a trap line if you want, but it'd be near impossible to reasonably talk yourself into the Angels tonight given that you can get the Red Sox as such small favorites.

Pick: Red Sox moneyline (-124 at WynnBet)
